For all the rancorous posts appearing in too many threads, some straight shots, some couched in sugar and grandmotherly sweetness, I could buy a nice kevlar canoe to do what this forum is about--going to and sharing the Boundary Waters experience with both new and old paddlers, and new and old posters. Instead we are getting assaulted with acidic, off topic comments best kept to oneself. Has the BW gotten so mundane that we have to conjure up sure-to-incite fundamentally political or religious threads that polarize and offend almost everyone? I'm sure some are thought to be simple, but think before you write what YOUR answer would be! That ought to be a clue as to where it's going to go. And if you are having a bad day, keep your paddle caloused fingers off the keyboard and wait a day to think it over. Please! Thank you.

Bill

Agree. I try not to take what is said too serious. Sometimes people just gotta vent lol. We all share a common interest here, and if we all shared the same view points, life would be pretty dull. Gots to treat one another with respect even if ya don't agree.

After all, if you knew you only had a week left to live, would ya really be upset with what someone said? Or focus on the things that really matter?

Yeah, I'm a freakin hypocrite to that saying sometimes.....but I'm trying.... :)

You go Sunny bear, very well said. That can be a mantra for life also, take a few minutes, gather your thoughts, and if there is still venom in your thoughts, then take a few more minutes before you reply, both in person or in cyberspace.

Malicious responses to peoples opinions are not acceptable here, This is a forum where we are all enjoying the same outdoor relaxation. We should all do here what we do on our trips. Forget the daily B.S. and enjoy the ride.

I agree we shouldn't hurl personal insults, but I would sure hate to see opinions - no matter the topic - suppressed because we don't want to run the risk of offending someone. There are a lot of very smart people on this forum and I look forward to hearing what they have to say even if I don't agree with them.

WARNING...Opinion from AndySG

IMHO, over the past decades, I've witnessed our elected leaders and their media puppets using opinions, insults, half truths, innuendo, and outright lies to debate issues and divide us into various camps. To me, this is a purposeful effort to keep the masses divided, misinformed and thus under control. You know; "United We Stand, Divided We Fall?"

As result of this example set by the Pols and the media, many folks believe that during any discussion of a contentious issue, it's OK to label someone from the "enemy" camp, and engage in an angry and insulting banter to either "shout them down" or discredit the opposing view. It is nice to think that this site could be free from any debates of this types. But alas, it seems respectful, factual and logical debate is fading from our society.

Sincerely yours, Andy

Well said...Daily life dishes out enough drama...I come here to get away from the BS.
I have enjoyed the years that I have been here. I have met and re-discovered old friends. People I believe will be my friends for the rest of my life. We've had some good times.
It has been a great resource for information, and has been good for a few laughs.
I love this place!

When my grandchildren are bad in school. They get a RED Dot by there name for the day.

If your posts are mean spirited maybe you should get a RED Dot.

Feel Free to cut and paste my dot, save it to your desktop, use it as required for bad children

I hope none of you get a "Red Dot"

I agree Ken. Vicious personal attacks date back to the Jefferson-Adams presidential election. But with the advent of talk radio, cable TV and the Internet bombarding us with angry attacks on people of all stripes, policies, issues, etc., I fear intelligent public discourse may be a thing of the past.

I long for the days of Walter Conkite.
