I got this big ol' floppy that seems to work well, but I haven't been in a good wet rain. The hat is some kind of a mostly cotton fabric. What I'm considering is waxing the brim to make it drain better when the heavens open up on top of me. Will this work, or am I just going to ruin a good sun hat?

I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Smells like victory.

I would think you could at least spray it with a good DWR, but it might make it a little less breathable. Might be a good idea to check with the manufacturer.

I also prefer a wide brimmed hat. Mine is heavy canvas and will shed water in a light rain, but when its pouring I'll switch to a ball cap under my rain jacket hood. I guess you could try something like This . I've not used it but it appears it will not affect the fabric's breathability.

Sincerely yours, Andy

Cotton kills.

Really hard to make this a really effective rain hat, I had a similar rain hat, finally got fed up and bought a Tilly Hat, which offers both excellent ventilation and since it's synthetic sheds water like a duck.

Usual disclaimers.

Yeah, I've decided it's a sun hat only. Luckily, I can roll it up and stow it, go back to the old oilskin ball cap during inclimate events. Thanks for setting me straight.
