This is a continuation of our interview with Cliff. We just turned the camera on and let him go wild, talking about whatever he wanted to about canoe camping and camping gear! We'll be adding more segments as we get time to put them together.
There's some excellent in-depth advice given here.
Please join us on Facebook and also check out our paddling guides on our website.

hes wrong about purifiers, at least when it comes to general ecologys first need. no iodine in them and they deliver tasteless/colorless water.

I'm glad you enjoyed it!
We had a great time with Cliff that day.
We're always looking for ideas on what films to produce that would help or entertain paddlers.
If you have any ideas or suggestions please don't hesitate to tell us. You can post your ideas here or through a private email, either way it will be much appreciated.

I'm kinda at Cliff overload. I avoid products with his name on them, simply because I don't want too many. My camp chair is a "Cliff" chair, I have a pack designed by him, and even a "Cliff" knife from Idaho knife works. He's a knowledgeable guy, but I'm just too much of a renegade tripper to have a prophet.

I have read some very strong opinions on this site about the effective use of permethrine....sounds like Cliff doesn't go for this natural product. Deet only....

cliff does e-mail. some of his opinions are out there, he has some wild stuff to say regarding the dangers of certain animals that many of us consider a non-issue. do an interview with Bob O'Hara, minnesota's real canoe guru.

Thanks for posting this, as it's my first exposure to Cliff, shock I know.

He seems to be a wealth of knowledge and I really enjoyed listening to these.

I really enjoyed these, too. I've read many of his books but haven't attended any of his speaking engagements. Fun to hear him pontificate.

I do like Permethrin, especially the stuff made by Sawyer Co., because it's odorless. I use it mostly to spray porous mosquito tent doors and windows. But I dearly love DEET. In the far north, it's about the only thing that really deters black flies--well...mostly. Perm. is good stuff but it's really an insecticide, not a repellent. DEET keeps the little critters at Bay. They will land on a net or shirt or whatever that's treated with Permethrin. But then, it's bye bye bug.

he is not wrong about purifiers, your (and First need) definition of "purifier" is different, that's all.

To some people, a purifier (purification)kills anything that could do you harm
to others, a purifier removes everything and leaves nothing but H2O (like properly distilling water)

some people would view First Need as a filter, it attempts to deliver "pure" water by filtration. If in fact the water delivered from First need is 100% H2O, then it is a purifier. OK, maybe it is allowed to be 99.999999% H2O (no doubt some standard allows "impurities" in the ppm range).

the distinction is mostly marketing, in the end, the only thing that matters is if the water safe to drink
