im not making my own jerky yet so i have to buy. found something really really good.

tender cuts, prime rib seasoned

I like Beef Jerky, but have yet to find my favorite. Some are so oily/greasy, some are really tough, some don't have a flavor I care for. I'm going to look for this one and give it a try.

Find a local butcher shop that makes it. Jack Links are mass produced.

Thanks--will give those a try. I'm always searching for the "perfect" beef jerky, too.

Here is what I buy, I've ordered 3 times from them and all have been excellent (except for the discount bag that they listed isn't quite up to standards, so it gets an extreme discount)

If you keep an eye out every few months they go on sale for around 15 a pound

Damn Good Jerky

WOW! 'Zesty Habenaro' and 'Death by Jerky'. Got to try those."

I have not tried those yet, I have had the Hawaiian Teriyaki (my favorite) and the Regular Teriyaki (haven't actually opened yet, will this weekend in BWCA) and the Original Hickory Smoked (Good, but fairly salty, I tend to only eat a few pieces at a time, as opposed to the other that I can't put down).

Anyone know if there's a factory store at the Jack Link's factory in Northern WI? I drive right by it on my way up...curious to see if anyone has any info. It's in Minong, WI on 53.

Agree, I've taken their jerky on other trips and it was really good. Last trip made my own and it, imho, was better.

Yes... right in Minong. The grocery store in town has a boat load of different products there, some in large bags, some in small.

The Link Stop gas station on the west side of Hwy 53 used to be a factory outlet for Jack Links but they're not anymore. They carry some jerky products, just not the "local" product.

I still go to the local butcher shop. They have a great recipe. It will spoil, so I buy it right before the trip and eat it quickly. OK, the eating quickly has nothing to do with spoilage.

We were just on a canoe trip with Ho Ho and David. They had homemade beef jerky from Zup's in Ely. It was delicious! Not dry at all and really tasty. The next time we are in Ely we are going to get some for our trip. It didn't have a super-long shelf life, though.

I didn't think Jack Links was made in Wisconsin much less the US. Louie's meats. Cumberland WI. I understand they now ship. My kids beg for it & won't touch anything else.

Found this on anther site...

"3 types of jerky: bacon, brisket and ribeye. All three dry at 160*F but for different timeframes:

Bacon - dehydrate as is, no added seasonings or marinades, total time 36 hours

Brisket - get thin sliced fatty brisket from the Korean market and season with a roasted garlic/sea salt mixture. Dehydrate for about 4 hours until it gets to be like chips.

Ribeye - get thinly sliced ribeye (shabu shabu) from the Korean market. This is thicker than the brisket and cut cross grain instead of along the grain. Marinate in wheat free tamari, worcestershire sauce, black pepper and red pepper flakes for 24 hours. Then drain and dehydrate for 6 to 8 hours. Store finished product in a refrigerator"

I also found a recipe for Dehydrated Candy Bacon


Looks like homemade bacon jerky needs to be refrigerated due to its high fat content or it will go rancid, but I bet I could freeze it and it would be fine for the length of a BWCA trip.

I am going to have to add this to my list of dehydrator experiments.

Jack Link's ground beef. Had 3 flavors precooked in foil packs. I didn't think it was that bad or badly priced.
No one else must have thought so because it was on the market only a few years.
So.....just dehydrate it on my own...

How did I not know that Bacon Jerky existed. I will be doing some winter experimenting on making my own version. I am intriqued by the candied bacon recipe as well. I have a feeling this is going to blow my mind!

My son and his friends call the Jack Links "crack bites". They are so good, there addictive.

I made the candied bacon jerky recently. Its ok. Not sure I'll end up eating all of it, but who knows.

Bacon candy...If you like spicy, add some cayenne pepper to the brown sugar. Wowee It really makes a difference. You can make bacon candy in the oven. I own a dehydrator, make my own jerky, and wouldn't use it for this..too sticky, messy & fatty..30 hrs? Just not for me. Use parchment paper or a Silpat on a cookie sheet, flip them halfway thru. About 10-12 mins each side. Let them cool on a rack. Break or cut them into squares. It's not really jerky, but it is really good.

If you like the idea of bacon jerky, you should try Jack Links maple & brown sugar ham jerky, I found it at Cabellas at the register-an impulse buy. Been looking for it ever since elsewhere & it's kind of hard to find. I loved it. Soft & chewy, sweet & salty.

Just soy sauce as a base and whatever you want. Add brown sugar, peppers etc.

Dry in the oven or smoker. Very easy and very good.

Edit: For beef and members of the deer family.
