My husband and I bring numerous packages of bagged SPAM on every BWCA trip we go on. We usually fry it up for breakfast, but also add it to rice or noodle dishes, or serve up chunks on crackers. Wild rice soup mixes are enhanced by some cubed SPAM!

Welcome to the board!

Yes, welcome to the board. Agree, SPAM is good stuff...for certain situations. I'm a fan of SPAM but not a huge consumer of it, probably because my freezer is always full of venison and beef.
We've brought the SPAM packs on trips as well. Easy to open, little waste and heats up quick. Goes well with everything and is great on a bagel. Cheers to SPAM!
By the way, that's a nice photo of SPAM in a pan.

Please feel free to jump right into all the other ongoing threads. Lots of good stuff going on around this community.

I'm not quite sure why you are thinking this is a commercial posting. I'm sure it isn't because of the word SPAM. We all know that name brand names are all over the threads. Please expound.

I like to bring the Spam singles in the foil packet. It is a tasty meal on a fried bagel, or cut it up in some eggs, or added to any meal for a boost of flavor.

I am a child of the 50's, and I grew up on SPAM. My mother fried slices of it, she baked it like a ham in the oven (studded with whole cloves, glazed with pineapple juice and brown sugar), she cubed it and put it in scrambled eggs, or scalloped potatoes. We never ate it cold, so I never experienced that until I was a grownup. But we had it often at home, and I thought it was fine. Not as good as ham, but cheaper and quicker to fix. As a newlywed, I used to serve it, too.

Spartan1 and I don't eat it anymore because we try to eat low fat and low sodium, and it is neither.

Fast-forward to 2012 when I was in the grocery store with my nine-year-old granddaughter getting food for our "cabin week" at Rockwood Lodge this August. I saw a can of SPAM and asked her, "Have you ever had SPAM?" She crinkled up her nose and said, "NO! That is awful, isn't it? ICK!" And I replied, "Well, really, I think everyone should experience SPAM at least once in her life." So I bought a can of it.

We had it for lunch, slices cooked in a pan with just a little cooking spray. It took considerable coaxing to get her to try a bite, but I insisted, as I told her it was an experience that I thought she should have once in her life.

And she thought it was "Yummy." She ate two slices. ;-)

A very hardy welcome to the site, please feel free to jump into other discussion groups, it seems to me [IMO] that no matter how new someone is to the whole canoeing experience they almost always have some experience that is interesting to share. FRED

I was born and raised on an Iowa farm, traveled overseas in the 60,s, hunted in several states, fished in a whole lot more states and countries, traveled in all the states west of the Big Muddy and a few east of the Big Muddy and I never saw a SPAM animal. FRED

Slice up some Spam into small pieces. Brown in a skillet, throw in a diced onion, a small can of green peas, add a can of sliced potatoes, a small can of mushrooms, fry it up good, and you have one of the best camping meals ever invented. Try it, trust me....you'll love it!!

So, this thread prompted me to check out www.spam.com. Sweet and sour spam? I will admit I don't recall ever having eaten spam but, maybe strangest item on a bucket list, none teh less I think I have to try it once at least.

We grill a piece when making a pancake breakfast. Make s Spam & pancake sandwich with some syrup in between. Pretty tasty.

When you are really tired and cold, like out hunting in the snow or paddling all day in the rain there is nothing like hot food with a lot of fat in it. Spam fits the bill. I rarely eat it at home, but out there is a different story.

Grilled spam with mustard, on a cracker -- a GREAT hors d'oeuvre that compliments whiskey and water at cocktail hour!

I open one foil pack of Spam, cut the meat into fourths and put each piece on 1/2 of a whole wheat tortilla, with plenty of spicy mustard. One of my favorite easy lunches. --Goose
