Not familiar with this entry point. Is it open in the winter...seems that it would be due to the location off of Fernberg. Now I'm throwing Good or Indiana Lake into possible destination for this winters trip. Any recommendation?

Yes it is opened in the winter, I've winter camped on Wood several times over the past two years. The parking lot has always been plowed, Wood seems to be a popular destination for northern fishing with tip-ups. I haven's been past Wood but I bet it would be a great trip for you.

Thanks karola, how would rate the Wood Lake portage? How long would it take to get to the NW site on Wood? We will be snowshoeing pulling pulks. Our plan would be to go in early afternoon on a Thursday, stay on Wood and then move Friday to Good for the weekend.

The portage into Wood Lake is one of the easier ones I've been on, you won't run into any problems...nothing too steep and it's relatively wide compared to other portages. I would say you can be at the NW campsite in about 2 hours of leaving the parking lot, it's not too far of a jaunt.

Yeah, it's all down hill on the way in and not too steep on the way out. If there is a warm stretch, the creek can be a little rotten but it's usually okay.

Walked in there a bunch of times over the years, but never camped. Good pike lake.

Usually a few cars at the entry point in the winter. Trail in should be hard packed.

I used to run sled dogs in there all the time, but since I am not in dogs anymore, I am not sure what the trail will be like. There used to be a fairly good trail maintained from wood lake to basswood, but not sure how often it gets used.

We went into this entry point last year. We did Wood Lake to Good Lake. It was a trek. Last year we had little snow and it was 50 degrees in January!!! We remember the portage into Wood from the entry point being very hilly and long. We had to use our arrest ropes on our sleds a lot and take our time. The portage between Hula and Good was also a little steep, but do-able.

There were no problems parking at the entry point either. We also saw a moose right before our entry point to start out our day, always a good start. Let us know if you go!!!

With the lack of snow, you could likely make it to Basswood. But, with a lot of snow, this trek would be really long. We had little snow and warm temps and we were tuckered out at Good. It was a nice camp too. We were also told fishing could be good near our campsite as well. We just never had the chance to fish there. It is an easy trip into Basswood from Good Lake. I'd stick with that to be safe.

Be aware that there is plenty of dogsled groups on Basswood, another reason camping on Good is nice. The dogsledders also have a lot easier time getting to areas with walleyes. Most of Hoist Bay is very shallow and good for northerns. There were already people fishing at the mouth of Hoist Bay when we got there. The dogsled outfitter showed us where to fish, which was very nice of him. He had a big group out spear fishing.
