I recently picked up a food saver off of freecycle, and it didn't come with any bags. I'd like to test it out before I invest in bags... is it possible to use a baggie with it for testing?

No.
The food saver bags are made of special materials, and I'm guessing a baggie would just melt and make a mess.
you should be able to buy a single roll at Wallymart.
If is doesn't work, you can certainly send the unused bags to me! :)

We had a party on new years eve and part of the trash included heavier duty mylar and thick plastic bags that chips come in (like triscuits). Both the vacuum and seal parts of it work, so next stop is to pick up some bags and test for real!

Mirth - If you go to foodsaver.com, they often have great deals if you buy 5 rolls. You may think thats a lot, but once you start using one of these suckers you wonder how you lived without it. Great for marinating meat, or just stuff in the freezer lasts a lot longer.

Thanks Mitch, I'll have to check that out if I get serious about this stuff. Seems like some decent-ish deals on eBay too, but I don't know enough about this stuff yet to know for sure.
