How many have run across naked people in the BWCA? Not just skinny dipping, but paddling, walking around in camp or sunbathing? Do you try not to look?

The most interesting encounter we had was with a male-female couple in Quetico, where the guy seemed to paddling stern naked. We had chatted with them fully clothed on portages, so it was kind of funny.

That said, skinny dipping and lying naked in the sun on a warm bugless day are some of the great pleasures of life.

Several times - canoed past a topless woman in the bow of a canoe on the Kawaishiwi river going in to Malberg lake, and coming out on the same trip there were two women sitting on a rock on the shore of Kawishiwi Lake bare ass naked. Can't say if it was the same woman, didn't notice any identifying features like hair color or facial characteristics. ;)
Another time it was a cold day of grouse hunting and saw a naked guy loading his canoe on his truck at August Lake. I assumed he capsized but he made no attempt to cover or conceal when I walked by with my shotgun... I didn't feel like chatting to find out the whole story.

Only once, a 70 year old man standing on a point on Badwater Lake. Not a pretty sight!!!

Seems as if skeeters and black flies prevent this for most of the season. It's pretty cold for the rest of the season except for mid-August.

Nudity used to be more common in the 60s and 70s. I have paddled plenty of times with women I been have in love with sans clothes, also backpacking trips in more remote spots.

I remember a trip on the Trinity River in No calif, about as technical a river as I have ever paddled. The wife's 16 year old younger sister was in the bow. As we rounded a bend there were a couple of young people playing the guitar and singing sans clothes. She did not react at all. Nudity is no big deal.

Nude paddlers in the BWCAW? I've definitely seen a few over the years. If you want privacy though, Quetico is generally a better alternative for going au naturale, because there are far less voyeuristic paddlers to contend with. :-)

It's ironic that this subject was brought up today. A friend of mine emailed me a link to an article posted earlier today regarding a rather well known nudist beach on the Lower Wisconsin River.

Nude beach shut down on the Wisconsin River

As far as looking, that depends. Although I've paddled by the aforementioned beach countless times, there's nothing there I want to see. The vast majority of nudists at the Mazomanie Beach are usually middle age, over-weight men.

Most sightings in the BWCAW have been surprise encounters. That is, I've come across campers sun-bathing in front of their campsite as I rounded the corner of a peninsula, or have come around an island.

There was a time though, five lovely ladies made camp across from my island campsite. Soon after landing their canoes and setting up camp, it was "topless time". They were not shy about it, because they were aware of my presence before making camp, and the distance between our camps wasn't that substantial.

A little later, three of them paddled by my camp wearing only smiles. If I wasn't a married man, I would have inquired about their suntan lotion supply and if they might require assistance with the application. LOL

As far as going nude in "Quetico-Superior" country, why not? What better way to commune with nature than going au naturale? I'm not suggesting paddling and portaging nude during peak season on the popular routes.

But, if your camping solo, or with your significant other in the remote parts of Quetico Provincial Park, why not? There's times when I haven't seen anyone for days, so after making camp, some skinny dipping and nude sunbathing only seems natural, so to speak.

I grew up on the banks of the Trinity River in the late 50s and early 1960s. This was before the dams and the river was still wild, having immense salmon and steelhead runs.
I never saw any nudes there but I still have some other very fine memories.

I used to run into lots of nude people back in the 70s, particularly around water. Not so much anymore. I guess I've got my answer - binoculars need to go along in my daypack.

A group of soft and pudgy middle age adults, male and female, walking around camp nude, maybe even doing chores. A few even came down to the lake to wave at us. Everything was saggy and lumpy. A couple of us laughed at the spectacle, but it upset a young woman who was with us. That was at Saganaga in 1983.

Used to see it more in the late 70's and early eighties. But haven't seen much in the last decade or so. I might take a swim on a wim that way, but I try not to ruin someones day by being to visible. :)

One of the great joys of Quetico traveling is stripping off all your clothes at the end of a long day of paddling and portaging and jumping into the refreshing waters of whatever lake you are on. Followed by standing in the sun to dry. It is a great feeling. Now if there were any people around that would be another story but there never are.

I have seen naked women 2 times & been caught skinny dipping a couple times... never really bothered me... Once we paddled past a couple of women that were playing in the shallow water naked & they didn't notice me in my solo canoe until I had obviously had full view of them for quite a while...LOL they just turned their back to me & lowered into the water... I was going to say hello...The funny part was seeing them 2 days later on the portage to the EP, I asked if they had a good trip & enjoyed their swim... we all laughed & they said "Oh god, that was you" LOL

I always skinny dip & sun dry on solo trips & trips with the wife. Its part of the wilderness experience !!

I agree with Repairgalal, my husband and I would never consider wearing swim suits in the B-Dub or the Q. That is also a consideration for us when picking a site, the more remote the better. After a swim and laying in the sun to dry off, if the weather is great, and we are in a remote site, we don’t feel it’s necessary to get dressed immediately, especially if it’s hot out. Skinny Dipping saves the weight and space of swim suits and the bother of drying wet swim suits or packing wet suits. The swim suit doesn’t hide anything away, right? Everybody already knows what’s under the swim suit, it shouldn’t be a surprise.

Like Hans Solo, I have passed the nudist beach on the lower Wisconsin any number of times......and have come to the realization that there are good reason's why humans invented clothing. Most participants were beer bellied middle aged men.

Other than my soon to be ex-wife (unrelated) no female nudity, sad to say. Saw an old guy go for a swim and walk up on shore.

On solos I routinely jump in fully clothed after setting up camp, strip down and rise my clothes off. If its nice I drip dry. If its really nice, I will wait for my clothes to dry. Most of the time I have a second change that goes on.

You are assuming they were of the same gender? A pair of rangers paddled over to our site to ask me for permit and all I could think of what a job - the government pays this male ranger paddle around the b'dub with a very attractive female ranger. Why didn't someone explain this option to me in the first grade so I could have started training for that job early.

nakedness in the boundary waters is special. i wouldn't like to get spied upon, but, I have to be honest, I have set up a fair share of my solo campsites nude. take off your clothes, stinky boots, check out your deal and aerate the body. i love skinny dipping. i remember on one of my first trips, with other guys no less, I vowed to swim naked in every lake we travelled through. To be honest, I can't remember how that worked out. I don't dip as much these days, but I will tomorrow if it feels right. It's part of being free - freedom.

I believe the correct anatomical word may be sac

I have to be honest, I never was interested in delving any further in the matter. I could only trust that his sack was well sunned and all the more happy for it. I know he certainly enjoyed the sensation.

I went to the BWCA only once with 4 couples. We had the Polar Bear Club every morning and all 8 of us swam without clothes. It was a great way to start the day, and seemed warm compared to Colorado.

Young people today seem to have little experience with public nudity. I was at a party once and a guy had a hot tub in the side yard. I took off my clothes and took a soak. Some of the young people made a big deal out of a non-event and gave me the nickname of the "Pink Torpedo."

There's alot of truth to that. When we were in jr high and high school, we showered after gym class. (late 70's early 80's). When my children went to school, they did not. In fact, most of the football team went home to shower. So I don't think they get used to getting naked in front of each other, at least in that way.

Hell, I remember some boys only gym classes in 7th and 8th grade, where the teacher allowed all of us to skinny dip in the pool. No way in hell that's happening today.

Incidentally, my wife and I try to have canoe sex once each trip. It's a tradition. And while awkward, and perilous, it is quite exhilarating.

Having said that, my father would ocassionally strip and paddle naked in the back of the canoe, and while I laughed, and just shook my head, it was really awkward for me.

On another note, the first time I brought my good friend up there, he wanted to paddle around and look for girls. Back in the 70's and 80's there weren't as many girls up there, as there are now, so I told him he wouldn't have much luck in that regard. By coincidence, as we were paddling out on our exit day, we were paddling across first bay (heading towards sag), rounded a point, and there, back in this little quiet bay was 5 or 6 girls wearing nothing but a smile, knee to waist deep in the water. We were probably 50 yards away, and they didn't seem to care that we were getting an eye-full. It was amazing! It's etched in my mind forever : )~

If that was you. Thank you for that!!

One year my buddies on the trip kept whining about how bad the Delahey Death March was going to be, & how bad the bugs would be (it was mid June). Every time they brought it up, I would just say..."I'm doing it naked"
So on the Death March, with a few hundred yards left & them ahead of me, I stripped. I put all my clothes, but my boots, in the pack.
They were waiting very tired at the end, as I came down the portage wearing boots, pack, & canoe (singing "Lady Godiva", with a few changed lyrics).
Much laughter ensued & photos still exist.

quote Stumpy: "One year my buddies on the trip kept whining about how bad the Delahey Death March was going to be, & how bad the bugs would be (it was mid June).
Much laughter ensued & photos still exist."

Prove it!

I think you people should plan a canoe trip with only the bare necessities. The motto is pack light with the bare essentials.

This link was posted on the "Say Hello to Helicopter thread" but I think it belongs on this thread: The poster titled it Sexy Women. I am pretty sure it is both sexist and racist, but the moderators might disagree. I am not offended myself, although perhaps I should be.

I don't know if the video would qualify as sexist or racist, but it's actually sort of cute IMO. Being raised Catholic, and going to a Catholic Elementary School and High School, I can relate to Salma Hayek's story.

I would not be surprised if there were a few girls that attended St. William's Grade School with me that didn't make use of Holy Water in much the same way, or at least considered it.

I disagree Hans. How dare that sexist, racist woman appear on national TV dressed in that overly revealing apparel? I'm appalled by her behavior. I was happy to see the man dressed appropriately.

Lately, I've been watching Columbo on Sunday nights and almost every episode, there is a character with his "bulge" bulging. Tight leisure suits. Gotta love the era of tight leisure suits.

Funny, you actually watched with the sound on. Kind of like reading the Playboy articles.

It was the year of the UPS strike. We saw a beautiful friendly brown haired woman (and not so shy about it) skinny dipping off the little island on the east end of Ensign. Days later we got stuck up against the north shore on our way home and guess who came running out to welcome us, with clothes this time. We bartered coffee for Malborros, (I smoked some in those days), and a place to duck out of the gail for a while. I have carried a camera and binoculars ever since, but no more sightings.

Stumbled across this as I searched for something else. Thought it worthy of a bump. :)

Since I've been a ranger/firefighter for the last 28 years I've seen my share.
The proper protocol is its fine to look, just no staring or gwaking.

I've yet to come across a couple having sex, but many of my co-workers have.
There is a place on the Kenai River called "Lovers Rock"
I've seen it, I don't understand its attraction for copulation. It's steep, rocky and looks to be really hard on the Knees ;-)

Protocol? I have news for you - if your wife/girlfriend is standing in front of me naked, I'm gonna stare and I'm gonna gawk. If you don't like it - put some clothes on. That follows much more respectable 'protocol'.

Paddling on Gabi a few years ago, we rounded a sharp point with a campsite on it. My wife saw the guy, obviously a solo, completely naked. I didn't see him, as he quickly stood behind his tent. My wife just said hi. Clearly he wanted to be nude, but not salacious about it. He was in the campsite across the lake from ours. The next day he was fishing, cooking and doing camp chores naked, all day. We couldn't see him clearly, but from the shiny whiteness, it was obvious he was sans clothes.

I've posted this long ago, but I was on Cherokee in 2010, I believe, at my campsite and got out of the water after skinny dipping to "air dry". I saw a tandem canoe a distance away paddling very fast towards my site, so I put my t-shirt on to try to cover up the "boys" the best that I could.

They turned out to be USFS people doing campsite/latrine checks, and they wanted to see my permit. Well, my permit was in the tent. Had no choice but to crawl on my hands and knees into the tent with the manhood and full rear end view exposed as I was looking in my gear bag for the permit. After showing it to them, they paddled off VERY quickly. They never even looked at the latrine, and only asked how it was. I told them it was just a real pleasure to go to it when there was a need, and it was nowhere full. They were a male-female USFS duo, and were the best canoe paddlers I have ever seen. So fast!

Having seen myself in the mirror almost every day, I didn't really think that my "stuff" was all that scary. Maybe more so now, but not back then when I was a little more of a "hard body".

Actually, I think I would just change company and not hang out with someone so 1-dimensional. You're probably one of those guys that makes women cringe even when they have their clothes on.

I was happy when they came out with good clothing to travel in. Now I have way less to worry about to sunburn and feed to the bugs. I think it was the second or third portage of the first trip we realized we should probably wear clothes next time. Haha.
