Just pulled the trigger on 6 #10 cans of M.House Freeze dried for next year. Stroganoff, chili mac, chicken alfredo, Breakfast skillet, corn, and strawberries. Added a dozen's worth of powdered eggs to round off to an even hundred...shipped. I wait until a day or two before leaving and vacuume-seal hearty portions that taylor to our needs. Saves some bucks .....especially for groups.
I need to use the dehydrater more, but like the taste of some dishes which are pre-seasoned/mixed. After opning up the #10 cans and sealing for our canoe trip; we sometimes have some left and seal it as well. We split it up and use later. I have kept some vacum-sealed bags until November and they were fine kept in freezer. (just to be safe). So far-so good. Don't know how to save and paste the link, but camping survival dot come has a good deal on mountain house big cans at the moment.

LDP Camping Foods has sales on Mountain House cans a few times a year. One sale just ended. You can sign up on their website to be notified of such sales. I have ordered from them in the past (bought a big can of freeze dried hamburger, and one of chicken) and was pleased.

When you repackage your portions do you weigh them out? Or when it's time to add the water do you measure how much or just give it a good guess?

I divide them in measuring cups. (Some items seem to have some finer textured 'settlings' in the bottom) I just divide as evenly as I can, then divide the recommended amout of water proportionatly. The amount of water needed is written on the sealed bag.

when i split 2 person servings i use a screen strainer to separate the little from the big. then i use a scale to even out the two portions. i use coffee filters to hold the servings.

it might take some math when youre dealing with 10 lbs.

Yeah I was thinking about this too. You certainly would want to use a scale. trying to make sure each portion gets the right amount of smaller stuff (sauce/seasoning usually) would be difficult. I like the strainer idea.

When I split the two serving meals I just pour out a uniform pile on the cutting board and separate into two with a dough knife getting the small and large bits in one split and weigh each portion to verify. You wouldn't be able to do this with a #10 can.

I've done the chicken pieces and the eggs with ham and peppers. I just vac seal them in two person servings. Works great when you want to go lt wt.

I don't have a small scale, so we dump them into a big stainless bowl. Shake a little to settle the crumbs and powder; then spoon it out. The big loose stuff is hand fed and shaken slightly into big measuring cups. It gets us by.
By the way, I heard Rich Moor shut down recently. STP has a helluva deal if you are subscribed to their 'dealflyer' by email. We all like their turkey supreme, and there are a couple other items we agree on. Sometimes hard to get consensus among four campers on everything.STP ends tonight for the special. But wait a couple weeks and it may still be on the next subscribed special. I just pulled the trigger. Hope it is still usable by next spring.....no cans-2 and 4 man pouches.

I think the pouches still last several years if kept in a cool and dry environment. Unopened of course.
