Handled great. Much faster in the water than my champlain but then again, it may have been the difference in paddling a 17' vs a 18'-er. Noticed more secondary stability when it became choppier on Horse that Saturday (10/12) that we were out. Less windvaning too with same trimming system that I use in my boat. Overall, great boat! Now....need to start saving my wooden nickels :)

thanks to everyone for reading! I realize that I need to return the favor more often as many of the trip reports that I've researched are a wealth of info...and enjoyable reads! (I love the pictures that folks post :))

Thanks HighnDry, great report! I've been considering this trip with my 10 and 12 year old boys and it's nice to get a visual of the route. I've read a lot about the Fourtown to Mudro portage(s) and I'm curios, would you consider going back out through Horse, Tin Can, Sandpit to be an easier trip? I'm assuming that it add time to the trip though.

To be quite honest, getting in (heading north)or going out from Mudro-Fourtown/Fourtown-Mudro is not that difficult. The first portage is rocky but flat and short(10 rod or less). As long as you have a bit of experience hiking and step carefully, you can easily navigate that first 10 to 15 rods in either direction. Takeout/put-ins are rocky but workable. The hardest part is the canoe carry but I was solo and didn't think it was difficult at all. The next portage,140 rods is really not bad as it is only a 20 or 30 sec paddle, the "up" from that either side is really rather gentle and the top of the portage is more or less a long flat walk with one or two climbs of 5 - 8 steps. The last "10 rod" is really the only tricky. Watch carefully if you are coming out of Fourtown because the real (and easier :)) takeout is about 2 or 3 rods BEFORE the one that I started with. So, in hindsight, I would have no problem taking my family - my kids are 11(my son) and 9 (my daughter) over those in both directions. My wife would make sure that they carry some of her weight too - which is only fair :). I think though to answer your question, it IS a fun loop if you go in with your kids via Mudro/Fourtown and loop back out Horse/Tin Can/Sandpit/Mudro. It gives a bit of variety to the travel & portages and is a very pretty route coming out!

Thank you for the great info HighnDry! It's very helpful and I really appreciate it! I'd really like to take them on this route and up through Gun etc. then down the Moosecamp River, but I think testing your route first would be a great feeler for the area and the fishing. Again, thank you!
