In the spirit of killing time through the hard water season, I am throwing out a lake and I am asking the board it's opinion on how they would go about getting in there. Some of these lakes I have been in and some are on my wishlist. Also, has to be a soft water entry.

First lake, Dunn lake- How would you go about it and what route in would you try. This lake is one that I have not made it into but is high on my list.

Happend to have the maps on the computer so, South Lake camp C0607 take stream to Mucker Lake, 100 rods(?), stream Mucker to Dunn, 50 rods (?).

I'd take the south lake hiking trail in past East Otter Lake and then bushwack, or muckwomp into the east end of Dunn.

From MN DNR - "Portage trail from East Otter Lake. Trail is only partially cleared, overgrown, with marshy areas that are difficult to pass. Trail ends are hard to see. Dunn Lake is entirely inside the BWCAW."

That would probably be the "easiest" way, though no way looks easy. It looks like an interesting lake.

we've hiked to dunn, my son's wifes name is dunn. the hill on the s shore of south lake is VERY steep. we have portaged down from topper lake (just to the west). it was so steep it took two of us to to manage the canoe (wood/canvas model). i would not want to carry a canoe up that hill, i would think that the easiest route would be the border route trail from topper lake. BTW topper is a real nice lake that is stocked with trout. it is worth the effort.

I like the thread idea, maybe a private forum to create a way to save and file the discussions should be considered.

My daughter (11 at the time) and I stayed on South lake site 607 last summer. We loved hiking up that creek, it was a lot of fun, but we never made it to Mucker lake or even to cross the border rt trail up there. We turned around when it got hard and was no longer fun to follow the creek. We never had it in our heads to make it that far, just our exploring a little. Just last night we were still working on our trip report and I told her we should have tried and she felt like it was too hard. At a point there is a lot of blow down in the creek blocking easy passage.

My other experience with bushwhacking with a canoe is that I did not realize how much room you need above your head to easily carry a canoe. I would think the overhang on that creek would be hard to carry the canoe in most places and the creek is Probably too steep shallow and rocky to be able to easily pull a canoe through.

In the end I think going up that creek would be a difficult challenge.

Float plane or helicopter! That lake looks well protected.

I would come in from East Otter, there is a winter use snowmobile trail that connects East Otter to Dunn. I think this is the way I will try one of these days. On paper the route through the creek from the north looks the easiest.

Walk in from the west on the Mayhew lake trail. When I was back in there fishing Sock a number of years ago, there was a group of three guys heading back into Dunn for some early season laker fishing. They were taking turns carrying the canoe. I think its about a two mile walk from mayhew or maybe a little more. Not too much bushwacking needed coming from this direction - just a long walk. You can actually drive quite a ways past Mayhew lake if you've got a good 4wd truck and aren't afraid to use it.

Great topic. There are 4 lakes, all along the Kawishiwi River west of Lake One that I've always thought about trying to get to. Carefree, Plukesley, Astray, and Uranus. Anybody ever been to any of these?

As you probably know, Carefree and Plukesley are in the Weasel Lake PMA. They don't look too hard to get to off of the K. River if the flowage is sufficient to float your boat.

Might be a nice quick escape from the number lakes crowds. this idea has possibilities. The point on Plukesley could be a nice site judging by the "lay of the land".
