Hi All,

I am new to this forum and would value your thoughts on my Kayak. I am planning on 3 trips this year to the BWCA - kind of got hooked (May- day only, July - family (canoe), and September solo (kayak). I own a Jackson Kilroy which is a fishing kayak - extremely stable and is a sit in. It is 12'4" in length and 64 lbs. How do you think it would do in the BWCA water. I understand the portaging issues (challenges). I would plan to go to areas with very few or zero portages. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, rob

Portages and storage. If you can address those two AND stick to routes with less portages, why not. Before you go pack everything and see if it fits in the kayak. It looks like you have a good storage area for at least 1 big or 2 small Duluth packs behind the seat. Not much up front, very small packs only under the deck in front. Portaging, you'd want to make sure whatever yoke you use doesn't leave the kayak too high (hard to balance) or too low (weight on your head or your head is so high (inside the kayak cockpit itself) that you cannot see ahead to walk.

On a side note it's a great looking kayak for what I use mine for on local lakes and rivers. I'm jealous :)

Thanks gsfisher,

Actually the black deck in front of the seat comes all the way off and you can stick storage all the way to the front of the boat. I got into kayaking last year and starting fishing some kayak bass tournaments. Once I tried the Kilroy, it just felt right. I am 6'0" and 280 and its a very stable platform. Thanks for your thoughts.

If you take a lot of dry bags you will want to take a pack to portage those in...
I did it last fall and base camped on an entry lake and day tripped to other lakes via portages to fish...unsuccessfully so non the less...lol. Carried everything at one time on my head...ok for short hops but I am in the market for a yoke.
