as anyone had any luck drying package meat balls?
the price for a #10 can is way to much for the couple meals i would use the freeze dry ones.
can i just put them in the dehydrator?

Wondered about dehydrating some myself, but I think they would be to thick to dehydrate safely, possibly cut them in half? My guess is that [hopefully] someone more learned than I can give out the answer. Personally I just use dehydrated hamburger, but true meatballs would be cool. FRED

Typical meatballs would be too thick to dehydrate consistently ... the hamburger needs to be in eraser sized pieces to dry properly.

How about dehydrating the hamburger then, rehydrate and form into meatballs in the field?

I'm not a cook by any sense of the word but I don't think rehydrated hamburger would stick together to be formed into meatballs. Please somebody out there has got to know more about the original question them me, but I guess you could always try it and if doesn't work take it to work and eat it or better yet feed it to teenage boys [having raised 3, I can tell you they will eat almost anything] FRED

Already cooked hamburger is not going to stick together to make a meatball. As for deydrating meatballs they are too large to dehydrate properly. When you dehydrate hamburger it needs to be like pea gravel size. If you get a can of Freeze dried ones take what you don't use and vac seal them into whatever serving size you most commonly use. IE: 2 or 4 person servings. Another option for you would be to freeze them and take a soft sided cooler with a small ice pack along to keep them in and use them on like the first or second night in.

I would think it possible to make balls "in camp" from gravel that has been rehydrated. Seems if you added bread crumbs (or some shore lunch) plus some egg (or egg substitute)... that u could form a ball that could then be lightly fried to firm it up again. A little effort, but if you got you're heart set on meatballs, why not? And it might b good way to use-up that pkg of shore lunch when the fish arent biting anyway!
