Entry date July 29th left Hayward Wis. at 6am drove to the Tofte ranger station pick up are permit at about 10am. Drove to the entry arriving around 10:45 or so. As we pulled up to the landing their were 3 forest service personnel loading a MNII for their trail clearing trip.

Had a nice conversation with them and about the portage conditions. They said they were heading into the area to check reports of down trees due to the recent storm. Had are permit checked and a quick over view of the rules with the ranger.

Hit Kwishiwi lake just after 11am after one small wrong turn (my tripping partner) Doesn't like using GPS. Maps only for him I find the both are nice. We hit the first portage and continued up to poly.

The portages between Kawasackong and Poly were through the burnt area and offered no shade. We were hit with a 15 minute down pour in that area.

We entered Poly and found a open site with the fire still smoking near the portage exiting Poly I believe site 1074 but I didn't look at the pit to be sure rate it a solid 3. We set up camp then the rail crew was coming bye and said did you lose a water bottle sure enough did was I glad to have it back only one I brought along. We then traveled down the lake for fire wood just as we finished gathering we notice huge storm cloud coming on.

We race back to camp dragged the canoe up threw the wood under the tarp and dove into the tent. It poured on us for a good hour plus. We then went out and did some light fish catching nothing but then we didn't try hard. We had steaks ready for dinner.

After cooking dinner and arranging camp we hit the tent about 9pm.

Day 2

Heavy fog with the rain made every thing very wet during the night with a west facing camp we didn't get dried out and on the trail until close to 1130. At the 2nd portage into Koma I notice a couple with Wis. Reg on their canoe. They were from Stevens Point and have been coming up for around 35 years. They gave us heads up on a 4 star camp site on the Kwishiwi River and some fishing spots. As we traveled across the portages we meet up with the trail grew several times as they cut and cleared the portages.

We traveled out Malberg to the west the portage had a small beaver pond across it 8 inches deep and 60 feet wide wet feet time. We hit the camp site 2050 about 330pm just after we pulled up the trail grew pulled up and said they wanted to clear a few trees at camp we said go ahead we just go fishing and come back. They decided not to and set up at the next site down the river. We went exploring and light fishing again no fish but we didn't try hard. A mixture of potatoes and onions and summer sausage for dinner.

Decent camp a good for fair amount of fire wood nice view.

Day three we decided to leave camp here and head up into the Adam lake area to explore. We went into Beaver and into Adams through he north east portage all these portages were lightly used and brushy no one was camping on Beaver. We entered Adams and caught a few small Small mouth. Found some rocks sticking up and went for a swim and learned the slime on the rocks was very slippery and had a hard time exiting the water.

We fished some more and exited Adams Smite lake portages the first 25 rod on my Mckenize maps we were able to walk the canoe down through.

The 2nd one on my map showed 90 rods very little used and does not show up on the over view map here. Brushy but very doable it would be very hard to find from the Beaver lake end. its right at the end of the lake just to the left of the creek and rocks One well have to look hard Its there barely. Had to pull canoe over some large rocks to get to the lake. On the way out we met the trail crew and informed them that the northeast portage was in good shape but the Smite lake one was really tight. They said they MIGHT open it up a bit it might not even be a official portage any more. As it isn't on the over view map here.

Got back to camp and found the trail crew had been their and cut out a large tree that had fallen across the latrine path. No fish potatoes and sausage for dinner again.

Day four left camp about 930am and paddled around the Malberg loop exited into Koma and stayed there. Found all the camps site little used and took what look like the best 1060 just before the portage on the north east. A 3 would have been better with a bit of use. This is the only site that I used my head net and that was only the next morning. Went and fished below the Koma Malberg portage and falls caught enough walleyes for dinner.

Day five left camp at 915am and headed out a bit of traffic heading out and in on the portages arrived back at the entry point at 225 pm makes a bit of different on travel time with a light food pack. On the short portage into square lake meet a guy and gal who had a first year of production We no nah Kelvar canoe said he paid 700 dollars for it way back when. One could see the change in design for sure.

Loaded the truck and head south stopping in Superior for dinner hitting the house about 730pm.

Over all a great trip hardly any bugs and the weather was perfect.

Canoe MNII ultra light two wood bent shaft and one carbon fiber paddles.

Our first time and this area and found it a nice area to go into.

Saw no other flying moose besides the one on my canoe.

Thanks for the report, riverrunner. Glad you had a good trip. Pretty similar to my trip last fall. We'll be going in there again in a few weeks, but heading east.

Thanks for the report. Yeah, it's easy to take a wrong turn up there, lots of roads turning off in different directions. I find that map & GPS work very well together!
