Perhaps a stupid question, but I know I can use a passport card to get back into the US, but can I use one to get into Canada? My wife and I are planning a trip into Beaverhouse, and I am finding confusing information online about the use of the card to get into Canada. Thanks.

differences between book and card.
Limited use land and water border crossing only.
Passport book or card are not required to enter Canada, proof of citizenship and identity is, a birth certificate and gov. issued photo ID are accepted. Kids under 16 need only present proof of U.S. citizenship. Don't forget vehicle registration and proof of insurance. I do not cross often (been a few years), but i think this is reasonably up to date.

Thanks. I have seen that, but it only addresses entry into the US, not into Canada.

No need to apologize, and thanks for the additional information.

If you are planning to drive into Canada, I got a card last year to drive back through Canada from Grand Marais to Sault Ste. Marie. No problem either way.

I have both a passport and the card. When I applied for a passport the guy I talked to advised me to get both when I told him that I did canoe and fishing trips---it was only 20 bucks extra and is worth the convenience it offers.

With the card they just run it through a scanner (both sides/ways) just like a credit card. When I re-enter remotely, we just stop into customs in Ely and they just scan the card as well---takes less than 5 minutes to check back in.

Can't you get the passport card as part of your MN drivers license now?

Minnesota now offers the Enhanced Driver's License if you don't want a passport or a passport card.

Visitors to Canada Found something a bit more oficial.

Notice that Canada does not require a passport or passport card to enter Canada, simply a proof of citizenship. The reason they ask for one from US citizens is because we require one to get back in.

A passport or any WHTI document.

A friend at church just got one of these. He was told he could get one a bit quicker than a passport or passport card. Luckily, that was true and he got his EDL (just barely) in time for his spur-of-the-moment trip to the Angle.

Although these are available, and can be used to cross back into the US via land borders and sea ports, they aren't good for anything else that a passport book is good for. Passport cards are only good for land border crossings and sea ports in North America, not international air travel, which includes flying from Canada.

I applied for my passport on January 20th and received it in the mail on 2/13. Not a terrible wait.
