I have visited Sturgeon lake many times. We often see them jumping on calm mornings. Russell lake and the Maligne river also support these fish.

Only personaly saw two caught, both were caught on a nightcrawler fished on the bottom. This was before the organic bait ban.

Just to seem them in a wilderness setting is something special.

Saw them as the migrated from Sturgeon Lake to Russell in May 2003. Literally dozens would congregate in the shallows at the Russell end of the channel before swimming off into the lake. Managed to hook a couple, but even with 10 lb test line it was impossible to even influence even the smaller fish. They swam away as if nothing was impeding their progress. Powerful fish!

I could just see hooking into a big one like 100 pounds in a canoe. It would be like the Old Man and the Sea story.
I guess they just keep and steady pull when on the line. Our them lakes clear water?

Definitely powerful....I was bass fishing (outside the Q) and felt a bump on my tube. Set the hook and landed this guy about 20-25 min later. 42" and about 14lbs....had it been a similar sized pike it would have been a 5-10 min fight. Snapped a quick pic and released right away.

Hooked a big sturgeon a few years before this...fought it for 30+ min and caught 1 quick glimpse...over 55"...BIG. after about half an hour my 8lb test reached its limit and off she went. Fun times.

Its kind of like a bucket list fish. I wouldn't care if it was 10 inches.I know a few rivers in northern Minnesota friends catch them.

I am from Shiocton Wisconsin. It is where the lake sturgeon of Lake Winnebago spawn. I've caught them up to 5 ft. Seen them up to 8 ft. Pretty impressive when they roll.
