Forgive my ignorance, but I recently bought a 60L barrel from ebay (looks identical to the Harmony one in every way), and had a question about the lid. Is the black lid supposed to snap on to the barrel rim, or does it simply sit on the rim (and then get clamped snugly by the metal ring locking clamp)?
Put another way, should the black lid stay on tightly without the metal clamp, or does it need to the clamp to keep the lid on.
Thanks!

It needs the clamp to be secure. It just sits on the top rim and does not snap on or lock into place without the metal clamp.

Let's just say that the lid has to be pushed on hard enough that the lip on the lid is fairly tight to the lip on the barrel so that the clamp catches both.

Thank you both! The barrel arrived with some serious dents and the rim was a bit out of whack. I was able to remove the dents, but wanted to make sure the lid was seating properly on the rim. Thanks again.

Something that I've found to help get the lid on tight while lining up and clamping shut is to push a knee down on the top of the lid.

Unfortunately I bought the same eBay barrel and it is not the same as the Harmony barrel. I bought a CCS barrel pack and the eBay barrel is more squarish and doesn't fit into the CCS pack which is made for a Harmony barrel which is more tapered on the bottom.

Also, on mine, either the gasket is bad or the the overall fit isn't good, because the lid is not clamped on tight and is certainly not waterproof on the eBay barrel. I know barrels--I have two 30L and now the Harmony barrel and they are fine.

Joe, was that the $20 barrel (+20 for shipping) from the guy from California? I guess you get what you pay for. Did you return yours? I'll have to do some more testing with my lid and clamp to make sure it's sealing right. If it doesn't make a waterproof seal then it's certainly not odor-proof, and that's a problem.

Anybody have a link to where I can just buy the metal clamps. I have one with a clamp in a CCS pack and it is great. I found two of the same barrels near home for $10 in good shape with lids but no clamps.

bump.

same question. someone in my town is selling some barrels (they described as "30 gal", I think they look like the 30l) for $5 a piece. I don't see clamps on the lids. Thinking I pick one up and buy a clamp. Somewhere. Hopefully.

Recreational Barrel Works sells barrel clamps and other parts of the barrel.

Ray - There's a guy on the West side of Schaumburg that sells barrels out of his house too. He shows up on craigslist a couple times a month. I think I paid $20 for a decent 10ish gallon barrel a couple years ago. He also gets 20 gallon barrels and other open/closed head drums.

Just another local option for you or anybody else in Chicagoland.

While we are on the subject of blue barrels. Does anybody have any suggestions or use of packs that can carry the 60 liter Barrel other than dumping cash on the CCS packs?

Granite Gear makes barrel harnesses. You strap them around most blue barrels and it acts as a backpack harness. I don't know if that's what you're talking about but I think that's you're talking about.

North49 and Harmony also make them. Check on ebay as there are some from both companies on there. Just search "portage barrel harness" in sporting goods on ebay.

Trust me, one long portage and you will wish you purchased the CCS barrel pack.
