What are your strategies for packing food and defending it from bears and rodents with the added packing constraints of a kayak (no barrels, no 5-gal buckets)?

Do you use hard sided containers? If so, which ones?

Do you hang or stash?

I need to carry food for 2 for 10 days. Everything will be dehydrated.

I use Sea Line dry bags for all my stuff in the kayak...I have 4 of various sizes and colors. Inside those I keep the items sorted with other bags. The different sizes makes packing a breeze. Of course the tent doesn't go in a dry bag. To portage all of this I have a mesh duck decoy back pack...it packs down to the size of a couple of softballs. Not the easiest to carry but saves on trips.

I also have used the sea line bags, mostly the 10 liter size. The smaller bags move in and out of the cockpit a bit easier and pack quickly into the portage pack. By taking the foam pad out of a CCS pioneer pack it would fold up nicely and I had adequate space to carry most of the gear; the lighter things going into a duffel bag. First trip the pioneer, duffel and when I started taking it a chair. Second portage was kayak with paddle and small deck bag. I found leaving much weight in the kayak made the trip more difficult and kayaks are not designed to carry much weight out of water.
Photo is ready to portage. The green bag was an over sized sleeping pad, light and fits right on top of the CCS pack.

Thanks folks. I think I have portage strategy figured out and will be testing it. It's the bear element that has me thinking.

What do you do with those food bags at night?

There is a good thread on the hype with bears going. As I stated there, I hang to keep the mice and other little bears out. One of these days I am getting a urasack and that will end hanging. The barrels are good, but I mostly solo and they are too big.

WE have always used bear vaults in canoes, but they don't pack well in my kayak. The Ursack may be an option. I'm looking for ideas on this as well for the kayak.

I just hang and not very well...the Sea Line bag is good enough to hang for me. Plus I have never been in a camp site that has had bear issues, that I know of..;-)

My yak is more open so we used Granite Gear Portage Packs and they fit great - wife and I each took one with food and gear and I used a 3 day assault pack for clothes, etc. Have a good trip
