Great report, really enjoyed reading it. Will be leaving in a couple days for a weeks fishing trip to Canada. Like you, I can't wait!

Thanks for the report! Sounds like you found a good spot.

How'd the vehicle situation end up on the way back?

WoW!,, good report. I love reading the good fishing trip reports and good job on the outfitter that helped you out. Hopefully this post gives them business.

That pike sounds like a beast and great job on the walleye as well!
Thank you for posting the trip!

Enjoyed your report. I was a fishing guide in that area 1970 to 1976. I have not fished it since. Not much of a small mouth lake than. Largemouth yes. Well done!

Ended up having to rent a vehicle in Duluth. Had to get a taxi ride from Ely since it was not even close to being driveable. Bum deal!

The smallmouth seemed like they were everywhere. At one point we were getting follows from larger fish every time we were catching one. It's pretty amazing to reel in 3-4 pound smallmouth and having another one going crazy chasing it right below the surface!! I imagine if we would have focused on trying to catch them for the entire week we could have caught hundreds! They were very active.

Wow, nice fish and nice report. Seems like 10 miles south of Ely is the spot for deer, my son and I totaled my Subaru on a doe there on our way back home in early June.

Hopefully it worked out for you. The crew in the totaled vehicle got soaked for a $250 cab ride to Duluth and then rental fees for a car to the Benton Harbor, MI area. Ouch!! Hard to believe there is not a rental car agency closer to Ely...like say in Virginia.

I know this is way too late, but there is a National car rental place at the Hibbing airport. It is closed on weekends though. It would have been about 40 miles closer than Duluth.
