This year our little group of intrepid September explorers will be base camping on Little Saganagana. We typically spend a few days fishing our base camp lake and then do a series of day trips to surrounding lakes. Since Little Sag is sans smallies and eyes, I am curious as to if there is a day trip lake nearby that they can be found. Yes, I did check the MN DNR fisheries survey and came up with zero. However, on a trip a few years ago we base camped at Ogish and made a day trip to a nearby lake and absolutely slayed the smallies. The lake we fished has no mention of smallies in the fisheries survey report, yet mentions only Northerns and Perch.

I know the eyes are likely a lost cause near Little Sag. However, a fun day of smallie action might be possible due to my prior experience.

Thank you in advance for any kind words of advice.

Only thing I can add the lakes close that are to the north of Little Sag have neither.

We were in that area a few years ago and couldn't catch a trout for dinner. We carried straight uphill to a tiny lake and caught enough northerns for dinner. Can't find it on the map now or remember what it was called, sorry. But I bet if you explored some little lakes around there you'll find some fish to catch/eat.

There is northern pike in most of those lakes and most have lake trout, except a few shallower ones.

Very very nice area. Done a lot of winter camping over the years just north of Little Sag. Many good times.

Thank you for the replies. Northerns are always fun and easy to catch, for me at least. Really am looking forward to getting a few lakers on the trip. As for the smallies, I think I may try my luck on one of the lakes that requires bushwhacking. It worked once before and they are an invasive species as viewed by many. We shall see.

Thank you for your replies.

I think we narrowed our end of June trip to enter at Round Lake and work through these lakes. Hows the fishing?

Anything to add to this thread?
