My son and I are scheduled to go to the Falls Chain on Saturday (through Cache Bay), driving up on Friday It looks like the office may be calm enough that I might be able to sneak away a day early, drive up Thursday and head in on Friday. How hard is it to add a day up front in Quetico. I would be okay if we had to buy a day permit and hang out at a campsite around the Ranger Station so we could pick up our Falls Chain permit on Saturday. In an deal world I would be able to pick up a day permit on Friday and pick up my Falls Chain permit a day early but realize this is likely to cause problems with the quota system.
Just curious.
Thanks.

I think you could show up at a ranger station and get a permit these days - maybe not your first choice but a permit none the less. Long gone are the two phones at 6:00 am exactly 5 months prior to entry routine.

I just returned from a 12-night solo. Originally planned for 11 nights, getting to Atikokan the day before (Thursday) to pay/pick up my permit and then enter at sunrise the next day (Friday) at Beaverhouse. While in Duluth on Wednesday night, the weather reports were calling for rain and thunderstorms starting late Thursday and continuing on through most of Friday. So I woke early, made it to Atikokan at 9:00 am on Thursday just as the ranger station was opening. I asked if it would be possible to enter a day earlier to beat the rain. She said things were pretty quiet and heading in a day early would not be a problem. I was only charged for the extra night and no fee for changing the entry date.
When I arrived at Beaverhouse an hour later, the parking lot was only half full. When I returned to the parking lot 12 nights later, the lot was full and another 10-15 vehicles were parked on the side of the one-lane road leading into the lot...the most vehicles I've ever seen at that entry point...
