Sounds like a good little adventure. The wind makes everything interesting. What were the water levels like while you were there? I'm going the other direction at the beginning of September. Thanks much!

I'm certainly not the expert, but a quote from the outfitters we used was "water levels are just a little low". Hope that helps...that was on July 31st.

WoW ! What a trip it must've been for the little guy. Glad he had a blast ! Sorry that you both didn't have enough time to fish ! But there's always next time/year ! Thanks for sharing !! :)

Let me be the first to tell you that the trips aren't always that rough. Don't get scared away from coming back. I was just in that area a few months ago.

You did pick a pretty aggressive route with a pretty young kid. Glad he enjoyed it. Maybe try a route with a few layover days so that you can spend more time fishing.

Thanks Joe, already planning next year to take advantage of what we learned, and hope to grow our group.

I feel for your struggles with that wind. I was on the Gunflint the same time as you and the wind was brutal all week. Blew day and night. Never a break.

Good job!! As a father of a near 10 year old boy with several BW trips under his belt-- I know what you experienced. Hats off to yourself and your son for persevering in tough times!!! Trips like yours make you appreciate canoe land when the wind is light and at your back!!!

Next time rent a map case that straps to one of the thwarts such as a CCS thwart bag/map case. You will never lose another map, even if the canoe flips in the current. Agreed on having another adult along. Took my son on trips when he was 11 and 12 (and going again this year at age 13) and made sure I brought along another adult, both for the help and safety in case anything happened to me. Also makes for a much better trip to have others to share the trip with.

very thoughtful trip report. your positive attitude throughout the trip probably also boosted your sons spirits, and vice versa... it's good you did your trip reflecting right after the trip instead of right before your next trip. your son is 2 years older now and would probably love another trip! there is adventure on every trip, no matter where you go! Have fun!

We did follow up with a trip in 2016, and trying to squeeze in another this year.

We did incorporate some of what we learned last year. We drove the 997 miles from Cleveland, packed a little lighter, had an itinerary that allowed us more fishing, exploring, etc. .

We took a full week on the water, 7 days/6 nights. (Why drive all that way for just a 3 day trip?) Spent 2 nights each at 3 different spots on Red Rock and Alpine. Got to fish more, explore more, work on camp skills more. Didn't take the second adult, but we only had a few short portages.

We were in the bad storm early morning July 21st, but survived that with minimal damage to camp. All in all a great trip.
