That's a bummer. I think the lesson here is to at least go a couple portages in. I guess the time of year really matters too. September is my favorite month to go. No bugs and way less people.

Having just gone through Alder last weekend I can see how it could be very busy. Hopefully the girls weren't too discouraged and will be willing to paddle farther on your next trip.
