I would just assume not to fish at all!!! I could snag that many in a single day!!! You can fit 50+ lures just in 1 tiny 12inch by 18 inch box!!! If you ask me you can never bring too much tackle and its not too big of an issue to be carrying a little extra gear!!! 2-3 of those small boxes!!

I appreciate the view of your box. The question really focused on what are the 10 best rigs, raps, baits you could use in the BWCA. If everyone just listed 10...it would be a great list. I agree though bring lot's. I plan to just looking for what works best for you if only given 10 choices.

I see this thread is posted in 2 places, so I'll reply to both:
Mepps Spinner. #3 (dressed) Silver/white.
Mepps Syclops. Orange
Rapala Taildancer. Silver (or purpledescent)
Rapala Husky Jerk. Silver
Little Cleo 2/5 oz nickel/blue
1/8 oz jighead (for leeches and twister tail)
white twister tail grub
steel leader
3 way swivel (for use with sinker and spoon/spinner/crankbait for deep trolling)
1.5 oz lead sinker
This is assuming I want to be able to catch Bass, Pike, Walleye, AND Trout (with spinning gear I guess). How does live bait fit into the only 10 pieces equation?

Fish where the fish are...

I've been going to the Boundary Waters and Quetico since 1984, and I've caught a lot of bass, walleye and pike with a #8 Shad Rap -- both casting and trolling. In fact, last year I kept the same blue and silver Shad Rap on my rod almost the entire week. I caught so many fish on that one lure that the blue paint is chipping off the sides. The Shad Rap is so versatile. You can cast and retrieve it in relatively shallow water along shorelines or below rapids. And you can troll it down to 15 feet. After my trip last year, I was thinking to myself that I could take a small tackle box to the Boundwary Waters with only a half dozen #8 Shad Raps and I would still have a heck of a week fishing.
You really don't need that much tackle. It's more important to have knowledge about fishing than tackle. Lure placement and presentation are more important than the lure itself. But if I had to bring one lure, it would be a #8 Shad Rap.
If you need a few more ideas, the following are tried and true for bass and walleyes in the Boundary Waters:
Rapala Tail Dancer TD-9 (silver/black, silver/blue, perch)
Storm Original Hot-n-Tot (silver/black, gold/black, silver/blue)
Rapala Original floating minnow in size 11
Rapala X-Rap in size 10
Mr. Twister Jig -- 4 inch in white or yellow
Heddon Tiny Torpedo
Heddon Zara Spook
Heddon Zara Puppy
Hula Popper
Mepps Aglia spinner with gold blade in size 3

Guys, don't forget the Rapala Minnow Rap! I generally bring about 10 lures, but most of the time we don't use them. You can have some really great fishing with about 12 spinner rigs, and leeches or gulp leeches or minnows, I bring a kit along that has all you need to tie up spinner rigs as you need them and the whole thing takes up about as much room as my water filter. When I need to replace lost rigs, I just tie up a few more, when I'm lounging around at camp.

i dragged this off the bottom of oyster saturday...seems the angler who lost this contraption was trying to use all 10 pieces at once!
btw-my understanding is that this is illegal in Minnesota (1 lure/line rule)
bottom bouncer, 4 steel leaders, 2 crankbaits (thunderstick and berkley frenzy) and mepps agila #4

yeah-i didn't even get all of it! something was still snagged up on the bottom that broke off. we trolled through this "saddle" area on the lake and snagged up pretty frequently with our single shad raps-i can only imagine how quickly they got hung up with this contraption.

Fish where the fish are...

I tend to be sortof old-fashioned. I fish mostly top-water. I love bass-oreno's, weedless jitterbugs, rapalas, creek chubs, torpedos, and the occasional firetiger. As a side note I crimp all of my barbs. So add these up any way you want and you can't go far wrong - at least I haven't.
In Nature There Is Order...

Yea, I haven't used bait on a Mepps spinner either.
Swivel... usually.
Weight... I haven't.
Bradylynn... I take a pic of my list for you... 'cept I'm reluctant to play with the tackle box yet; my wife will say "you're doing that ALREADY!" She'll make fun of me.

Where's the love for the kalins smoke colored grubs? That's always been the consistently top performing lure for me.
I always bring a bunch of the grubs, some jig heads and a variety of rapalas.
Oddball: Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

My "Go to" lure is a 3 inch sinking rapala in perch color. I let it sink a few feet (or deeper if need be) and jerk 2 feet, pause then jerk.
I had my best fishing day using this. I was on Eagle Lake in Ontario and in the morning I caught a 4LB 12 oz. smallie then lost it's mate a few casts later at the boat. Later that afternoon I landed a 34 inch muskie with the same set up.

TNT!! Actually I have never done really well on Walley up there pulling around all kinds of rapalas. Three years ago I started going to Lake St.Josephs in northern ontario.I have not been to the BDUBS since I started going there. the walley fishing is unbelieveable up there using jigs and white Mr. Twisters. at any rate I was talking to the guide one year about BDUB fishing and he laughed at me and told me to fish with the jigs and tails the fishing would be great. I plan on doing just that this year. I am going to Canada in the spring and the dubs in the fall.

OK......... Blue Glimmer Pearl Zulus.
Actually I would be OK with either Blue Glimmer Pearl, Grey Glimmer Pearl or just plain Pearl. It's hard to pick just one. Sometimes color doesn't matter and other times it can make a big difference, but if I had to choose between the three, I would go with Blue Glimmer Pearl.

I never tried my blue and silver last year :( I'll add that to my list this year.

Yikes.
Considering I can lose six lures in a day due to pike, if I were limited to ten, I'd be picking long lures that keep some distance between the pike and the line.
As much as I like plain, brass-bladed Mepps (and I thought that that was my little secret), I'd pass on that lure because it's so little and pike easily swallow them.
I'd just open my tackle box and grab my ten longest lures and even then, without using a steel leader, I'll probably only be able to fish for three days.
If I decided to fish with a steel leader all the time, then I'd be picking high action, heavier lures that can overcome the resistance of the steel leader.

I was surprised that I didn't see bottom bouncers listed more often. I like to troll with spinners or rapalas, and if the action near the top 2-5 feet isn't so great, I slip on a bottom bouncer (one that has a rubber tipped alligator tip at the top, that can be quickly added).
I am a fan of slip bobbers, jigs and leeches, too. But does trolling and/or drifting with bottom bouncers not work so well in BWCA?

The occasional lake that has a more sandy bottom, then its bouncers all the way with spinner rigs .

I take hundreds of pieces of tackle. I just got back.
Here is all you need:
- Leeches and slip bobbers: a leech, 1/8 oz jig, slip bobber, bobber stop. Catch lots of fish.
- Taildancer (blue) or deep taildancer (purple): Great trolling lure. Might as well be fishing while paddling.
- Topwater poppers: Nothing is quite as cool as a nice smallie or pike crashing a topwatwer bait.
- Zulu: Check out the BWJ article and other threads. Great lure that works similar to a topwater popper,

If anyone finds my trolling rig, I'd like it back. I think I lost it on oyster a couple weeks ago. It has a couple soft plastic crank baits, and some steel leaders on it, with a bottom bouncer. If not perhaps I'll need to post this on the lost and found forum. Thanks.

seriously though. I drag a rapala (chartreuse or black n silver) when I'm on the move, or throw slip bobbers and leeches when i'm stationary. I keep four rods in the canoe, 2 for me and 2 for my wife. While we're paddling we troll the raps, and when we get to our favorite, hump, weedbed, whatever, we put the rod with rap away, and pull out the slip bobber and leech. In the afternoons when the walleye bite slows down, we go along shore with the floating raps, pitching and twitching next to down timber, or rocks.
Sometimes, I'll take the rap off the snap swivel, and replace with a floating lindy type rig. The beaver hut in grand marais has these nice little floating rigs with colorful float balls. It's about a 28" leader, with around a #4 hook, float ball, a couple beeds, and a loop at the far end. The loop gets hooked to the snap swivel, and there's about 6-8" of extra dead line coming from the loop. You attach a split shot or two to the excess line. Whenever the split shot get hung up in the rocks, a steady pull, will pull the split shot off the line, and your rig will float free. We use leaches on them. But minnows or a chunk of crawler would probably work too. It's a great little rig, because all you lose are your split shot, and get everything else back.
I really believe in slip bobbing though. We bring a portable depth finder, and if you can find some mid lake humps that the majority of fisherman don't know are there, you have a gold mine.
The lake I've been going to for 35 years, has about 8 spots on the lake. You can hit them all in a couple hours, and one of them is almost always holding fish. I'd say 4 of them, avg joe wouldn't find on a casual pass through the lake. You just wouldn't even know that hump is there. One spot is actually about the size of an infield in baseball. The water around it is 12 or 13 feet deep, and the elevated plateau is just 2 feet shallower, but has an abundance of weeds, and holds fish as long as it's early, late, or overcast with wind. If you try to go in there between 10-4 on a calm sunny day, you'll just spook em out of there, and they don't bite. In May and June, the weeds come up about 1/2 way to the surface and it works great to drift a slip bobber set at about 4 1/2 - 5', over the weed tops. Once you get into July it's pretty tough to get you leech in front of them, as the weeds come nearly to the surface and are really thick. Then you need to jig, and get the bait down. Any sort of sideways movement though, you're bringing in a big clump of green.
Sorry for waxing on.
My son played hockey with this kid, who's dad was an attorney. He had a good chunk of money. He and 3 of his friends split the cost of a float plane, and got their pilots license. They'd go up into Canada, fly over lakes, and just look for patches of weeds. Weed beds aren't all that common, that far north, and whenever they'd see a nice patch, they'd put her down, and pull out some very big pike. Find the humps, find the weeds, find the fish.

I probably bring more than a 100 different pieces of tackle with me, but If I could only have 10.
1. Rapala Husky Jerk
2-6. Beaver Flicks
7-8. Slip Bobbers
9-10. Split Shot
It's hard to beat the reliability of a big leech or a piece of night crawler on a beaver flick under a slip bobber.

So what if I could only bring 2?
Hard to pass up Senkos, but when fishing from a canoe, it is easier to just cast and reel a jig/grub. And I would die if I didn't have a topwater when they are on that bite (and wouldn't I go crazy not knowing?). Or would it be senkos and jig/grub, for slow and fast options, respectively? No jerkbait? Bite your tongue. No shad rap? Heresy. And only in the BW could I imagine fishing for smallies without a tube bait, which only gets snagged anyway. Now what did I do with all those old Mepps and my flashy new spinnerbaits? Did someone say live bait (TGO)?
(Sigh)It's still winter.

I have a few beaver flick's but have never used them . I will have to give them a shot this year since we are going to lake with walleye in it. Are they as good as advertised?

8-10- 3 random cranks I’ll use less than 10% of the time because I catch most of my fish on 1-7

I read this question to mean not live bait, so notwithstanding live bait:
1. Jointed Rapala – #9 – Gold/Fluorescent Orange
2. Dardevle Spoon - Red / White – 3 ½”
3. Dardevle Spoon – Blue / Silver – 2 ½”
4. Hula Popper – 2” – Perch Color
5. Mepps - #5 – Black Fury Dressed
6. Mepps - #3 – Aglia Gold/Red/White Dressed
7. Rapala - #7 – Original – Black/Gold
8. Reef Runner – ½ oz – Silver/Blue
9. Jig with Yum Dinger – Watermelon/Red Flake
10. Rapala – #11 Deep Tail Dancer - (upon recommendation here, trying in August!)
Unless I am fairly confident it won't be a northern on the line, I always use a steel leader. The risk is just not worth the "extra action" IMHO.

Well since it's back..........
3 swimbait heads
7 swimbait bodies.
1 bottle of superglue.
I can and have caught every species up there on swimbaits. Walleye and bass especially love them. I'd have to be careful to not use them in what I call northern zone. I'd not throw them where I was pretty sure I'd catch a northern. That way I may only lose a couple to northerns.
One those 7 bodies, I suspect I could potentially catch 100-150 fish....Maybe. :)

2. A size 4 Mepps spoon, silver blade, dressed hooks
4. A perch colored size 13 Rapala
5. A LAzy Ike, also called Flatfish, in 1/2 or 3/4 oz size
Now, just take 2 of each! Dave"
That’s my mindset as well.
Although last trip I used three lures to catch everything.
Floating wood rapala, Jig and leech, and the killer of Pike (aka baby bass Zara spook jr)
