That's a good unit. I used one all last summer after trading in my Spot. I can't remember what I paid for it off the top of my head but trying to find them any cheaper than the above price is difficult. It's a good deal if anyone feels the need.

I haven't owned a spot so I'm not qualified to say. What the inreach does is allow you to have two way communication via text or email. It also sends your location, and your friends can check your progress. You can set how often it sends locations.
I had it on a three week trip to Wabakimi, and I was afraid of running the battery down, so I kept it turned off except each evening, when I would turn it on and send out a preset "we're OK". At the end of the trip, I was able to arrange my car shuttle a few days earlier than planned. It's nothing you would want to write your dissertation on though! I believe texts are limited to something like 140 characters.
I finished the trip with over 90 percent battery left! You do have to subscribe to their service, so I'm not sure how that compares to Spot.

Mocha, There have been quite a few discussion on these threads comparing the two as well as those who have posed the question if they are needed at all. It can come down to a personal preference as to what you carry and why. I understand that SPOT recently rolled out a two-message feature giving it a bit more equal footing with the Delorme Inreach. Each has its own unique features as well. I had a SPOT before trading it in for a Delorme. I also subscribe to the Delorme message system for about 4 months out of the 6 months season as I usually paddle the fall season in BWCA which somehow seems a bit more familiar. When I carried my SPOT, a 1-year subscription was mandatory. That may have changed.
This is just my approach and others can give you better suggestions as the usefulness of the GPS and other features on the Delorme that may not yet be on the SPOT or why they prefer the SPOT above all else.

Best to check out their subscription plans and decide if you want to pay their monthly rates. I went with a Freedom plan so I could cancel between trips. You otoh, may want a Recreation plan where you would pay the $25 annual fee plus $35/mo and be able to do 40 texts/mo.

I have used this for a few years now. I had a little problem with their billing a time or two. But, I have it on an emergency type plan now where I pay 20-30 per year and then 15 for each month that I actually want to actually use.
Typing on it really sucks, but you can bluetooth it with your phone if you bring it along as a camera as I do. Again, its not meant to type homesick or love letters. Hopefully you never feel the need to even turn the thing on.
It has an emergency SOS feature too. It proved its worth to me when we arrived at our destination on a point-to-point trip a couple days early and were able to arraign for pick-up. Had a similar use when coordinating a change of plans for pick-up due to wind/weather. Have not used the Spot, but if your only goal is to have an emergency beacon, I would shop price. If you want a two way conversation, or actual message capability, this is a pretty handy thing. Messages anywhere on earth if needed. Good use when traveling anywhere, not necessarily just in canoe country.
