I was thinking the same but I think I'm gonna like it. Thanks for the new look Adam.

I like the new look. Now I get to take it for a test drive to see if usability and interface are improved too!

Wow. Fantastic.
Constructive opinions (others may differ):
1.). My first reaction from my mobile device is, try to do things in fewer lines so more stuff fits on the screen.
For example:
NEW!
Last Posted: 07/19/2016 11:45 am
Can be:
07/19 11:45am
(and then change the color if new.)
Also, I don't think you need to explain what the messageboard is in a full sentence, etc.
2.). It also needs more "style" to set you apart. Web programmers are not graphic artists. Find one.
3.). I see some great pictures in the headings that users post. IMHO that is the best thing about this site. Find ways to use more user pictures.
That said, great job!

This is great! Thanks Adam!
I was at first a bit overwhelmed, but then as I started to work in I really like it. Change is scary for a lot of us, but for those that are overwhelmed by this change and currently don't like it, just try it out for a few mins. You will noticed it's actually easier to find things and post/comment.
Thanks again Adam
Mike

Absolutely GORGEOUS!!!!!!
I was just on last night too. Very cool.
Plus, it now works with Google Chrome, which it hasn't been for me for at least 6 months.

It would be nice to still see the last post date for a given thread within each forum.
Otherwise looks good. Definitely will need to fart around with it a little to get up to speed.

Thanks for the feedback. We expected some bugs and issues, but this has been a long time in the works and this ground work need to get put in place for additional changes and improvements.
Please report bugs here, but try to help out by posting if you are having issues with a phone, tablet, or computer. And then what type and version of browser.

Any chance for a "report" button? Used to bring attention to spam or other improper posts...
here's a spammer:

In the reply page, some of the ads and other boxes overlap the typing area on the right side for me. Not sure if there's a way to fix that.
The dates on the forum page don't fit in their boxes either. Maybe just my computer; using IE as my browser.

topo maps are buggy. strange red circles with numbers appear when I switched to USGS topo. islands do not show up on either but the camp sites are positioned correctly. text does not fit into texting perimeters: the first letter of each line is missing. (HTML coding?)

The trivago ad has a curser that is making my iPhone (Safari) automatically scroll to the very bottom forcing me to scroll all the way back up. I don't mind a ad or two, but ones that force you to take some type of action every time are VERY annoying.

Looks like I need to come up with a shorter name that doesn't go outside the profile box. This happened on the old site as well but not as much.
I notice dates for thread origin also don't fit inside the grid.
FYI, I am using safari on an iPad in landscape position.
These issues do not occur when the iPad is in portrait position.
Otherwise I think the board looks great and will be great once the wrinkles are ironed out. Thank for the hard work!

I think some of the changes are moves in the right direction, but there is certainly room for improvement. The two tone design, especially the dark brown causes a number of issues, mostly with text. Here are some mobile screenshots from my Android phone using chrome that show the issues:
The drop down menu should absolutely have an easy link to the message boards. But it unfortunately doesn't yet.
.
My mobile experience involves too much scrolling in my opinion, especially in the message boards. The type is large and easy to read, but too much so on mobile. And there is a ton of wasted space on every post, between posts, and especially with quotes.
Something to distinguish senior members from new members would be nice, a post count maybe? Most forums incorporate something like this.
Lastly, in the forums, it would be awesome if there were easy links to member's photo galleries and trip reports when you click on someone's name and go to their profile. It would also be great for easy access to your own information. Please add this!

when trying to enter private forums from the Your BWCA.com Account page I get the 500-Internal Server Error when I click on any Group Home Page.
This does not occur when trying to enter a private forum from the main messagebords page.
I use firefox browser, and Windows 10, if that makes a difference.

Maybe it's just me, but reading trip reports always gets forgotten. I love to read them and look at the photos, but I wish there was a way to move them into the General Discussion forum. Even if it was only for a week or two, then they would automatically default to the Trip Reports forum. Not sure if that's possible. The trip report forum is a virtual library of sorts and it's my guess that more people would read them if they were posted on the main page.

I like the new look and function of the website. It must have been an incredible amount of work to set this up and it all works great. I like how it is easier for people to get information on Outfitters and Lodging. I believe their sponsorship really helps keep this website going.
I do miss the gold burnt yellow color of the background though. I like rich colors.
Great job to Adam and all those involved. Thanks!

I agree, this new layout is not tablet or phone friendly. Posts take up way more space and it takes much longer to scroll through a thread. Hope there can be refinements to make it as easy to read as the old format.

Yep, I like better after I took it for a spin around the block a few times. Thanks Adam! Good job!

OK I take back what I said a few days ago. I have been looking at the site on my phone until tonight. I like what I see of this site on my desk top. Maps are a HUGE improvement.
Viewing on my Phone however...yuck.
I know how much work went into this and I appreciate it very much.
Thanks.

Recommendation on date formatting to reduce the forum listing/thread listings.
Option 1 date format uses: Today, 7:27 AM; Yesterday, 8:42 PM; then date format like Tuesday, 7/19/16 4:22 PM
Option 2 date format uses: 24 mins ago; 1hr ago; 2 hrs ago; 1 day ago; 2 days; 17 days
Option 3 date format uses: existing format
Additionally, removing the Enter button (as users can click on the forum name to enter) provides space for the date where the existing Enter button is. You can remove the words 'Last Post' by making it a header at the top of the current Enter column, which means only the date/time of last activity needs to be listed.
I'm willing to help if necessary.

This one is most annoying - phone, tablet, or desk top - as posts that have been here for three days show up as "new", but there seems to be no way to indicate or force a post to have been "read".

The site is saying my last visit was 7/19, but I've been on the site 7/20 & 7/21. Not a big deal, but it doesn't show stuff that I looked at on those days as being read. Everything looks like a new post for that time period.

Bingo. I check in several ties a day and it says my last visit was three days ago. And log out - as happens a lot unintended - and few posts are marked new - like maybe just those since last visit. Apparently it keeps better track of when you visit if not logged in.
PS: if you log out and log back in, it nearly updates last visit and what is new. In other words, does not know you visited recently if you stayed logged in. A definite down grade.

Accessing campsite and portage information in the map section is very difficult with my mobile device. Samsung Galaxy S6.
I press on the red dot for campsite information and nothing happens. Does not matter if I am zoomed all the way in or out or in between.
Same for portage information.

I like the site's new design in general, but am I the only one who finds the new Google Maps design a chore now? I have excellent vision, but the lake and land borders are so light that I find myself squinting. The points on the map are well marked now, but by just making everything else darker, it would alleviate the problem.

With safari at least I think the first time you hit submit all you are doing is closing the on screen keyboard by taping the screen outside the keyboard area. The second tap actually submits the post.
In making this post right now - when done typing I will hit the close keyboard button in the lower right corner of my on screen keyboard and then will hit the submit button just once.
Presto!

I have to re-login in every time I visit the site... and then it takes me to my account page. From there, it takes a couple more clicks to get back to the message board.
Even when I click 'remember me', I am still logged out every time I leave bwca.com and then return. It gets old having to re-login every time and re-navigate to the message board.
I am using Windows 10 and Firefox.
Maybe I am missing something...

I have been trying to use maps with comments about the portages and campsites.
The portages no longer have the active buttons at the ends.
You can float over them and finally get a comment pop-up to come up. However, the comments are not about the portage you clicked on. e.g. I clicked on the portage from Lower George Lake to Karl Lake. (Entry 50 Cross Bay) It brought up 2 comments from TuscaroraBorealis and jniehof about an anonymous portage. Both comments list the Entry Point as 77 - South Hegman Lake. Perhaps you can get from South Hegman to Karl Lake, but it is unlikely that two comments 8 years apart are from that entry for this portage.
I think the campsite comments are correct. I checked a couple against ones I have done before, but the incorrect portage situation makes the campsite comments suspect also.
I have been using Chrome on an older Mac computer. Same thing happens on my iPad using Chrome. Same thing happens using Safari on my iPad.

I have a couple questions about Trip Reports and the new design...
1. It use to be you could "save and publish later" a trip report if you were not done with it. These were accessed at my.bwca.com, but this personal page seems replaced by Your Account. I have twice saved and gone back, and was not able to find the draft. Is it lost, or did I screw up something (see #2).
2. I tried to embed a Youtube video into the Report; not just the URL but the embed code Youtube provides. I have seen this done on another trip report and thought it would work.....http://bwca.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=trip.report_view&sel_trp_id=3385. Is this no longer possible?
3. I added several photos to one draft and they "tiled up". In order to get them to line up on the left, I tried some page returns (this use to work), then tried adding "br" "/br" tags directly and it seemed to work...right up until I got a server error. Did this cause the problem? I didn't do this the second time.
Oh, and like others I have to hit submit twice on about everything. I'm using Safari 9.1.2.

If you click on Login up left bythe flying moose, this happens. It shows your last log in as right then, so there's nothing that shows as new.
If you start by clicking on the Messageboard link in the upper right, it will show your last log in as being in the past and then you'll see new posts. The catch is that the last log in date will wrong. You'll have logged in in after that, but it doesn't catch it for some reason. You'll have a list of new posts that include stuff you've already read.

All I know is that it doesn't work well at all to see which posts are new since last visit, and the old one worked perfectly in that regard, staying logged in (on three devices!)

It's a pain for sure. I logged in this morning, not taking my own advice and its hows no new posts.

I don't know if its logging in on several different devices or not, but this was not a problem previously. I stayed logged in and each time I opened it in a browser all of the posts since I had last visited - even if on a different advice - were marked as new. Definitely less function. I still wonder if a "mark all posts read" like other bulletin boards wouldn't solve it. I do hate the way this one tries to be "smart" when viewed on phones and tablets and trying to change bookmarks to always view full web site.

When editing a post, clicking into the text window at the exact spot you'd like to begin editing makes the text increase in size and your cursor is not at the spot you chose, forcing another click before typing. Clicking into and out of the text makes the entire text box increase and decrease slightly in size, along with the font size. Why?

I've found that if I click near the top of a large button (like 'Submit'), my cursor stays within the limits of the button even when the screen jumps up a bit. Then, a single click does it.
Seems like a lot of pages suffer from a slight change in font size when they're clicked.

I also need 2 clicks to submit (pics/posts) on mac safari.
In the solo forum, on the recent first aid thread, the post font (not just quotes, but everything) mysteriously changed to all italics about halfway through the thread.

On our Photo Album pages:
How about allowing us to choose the number of images which will appear on each album web page? I know that those with slower connections might appreciate keeping the number per page down to the current 12, but allowing a user with a faster connection to load 24, 48, 96, 192... or All ?? photos on one page would save them a lot of time overall finding an existing photo to post. or to edit. or to delete.

A definite down grade."
Until this site is modified to recognize new visits to individual forum pages each time a logged-in user accesses them, here's my working routine:
Open bwca.com.
Click 'Messageboard' and read all unread posts in each forum of interest.
Click 'Logout.'
Click 'Login.'
Close bwca.com.
Repeat.

Okay... so, now even THAT doesn't work reliably. After being away for 5 days, it logged me out and shows posts of just a few hours ago as the only new ones... Logging in again showed all posts as already read.
Really. If we are to use the message boards fairly efficiently, it has to keep track of the last time you visited and which posts you've already read... including not updating while you're logged out.

Just tried to add a photo to the maps and a 500 Internal Server Error came up, something about a Variable PLACEHEADER is undefined. Does the same thing if I try to add a fishing spot or a point of interest.
Thanks for the new layout. Looks really good.

That,s weird - because definitely not what happens for me on any of the three devices I use.
I still think a "mark all posts read" button would solve this at least temporarily. Then any posts after that would show as new regardless of actions. Works well on other boards.

Correct. fishingminnesota, for example. And that's the point.
This afternoon, I thought I'd give your method a try:
12:00 - Read everything current, then logged out and quit.
1:30 - came back to the site and logged in.
All threads show as already read, even though dozens of posts had been made in that hour and a half.
Please, adam.

Question. Are you using old bookmarks, ones that go to BWCA.com logged in? I think it could be possible that you are logged in and then log in again, which resets it kind of. Try my method but instead of using bookmark, just type in URL.
Very disappointing it's so hard to do what we use to.

Thanks, billconner. I'll just keep trying diff options. (There is, actually, a significant upside to this "problem": I can fire up the site, do a search or check on a map or photo, etc and then quit... without affecting my unread posts count.)
Totally different item:
At the bottom of nearly every page, center column, is a blurb about how to make a (much-needed) donation to the site, titled 'HELP SUPPORT BWCA.' While I applaud having this link available (and wish that somehow it could be even more prominently displayed in places), it probably ought to be edited to read 'HELP SUPPORT BWCA.COM.'

I checked the site this morning & read/unread marks seem to be better. I didn't do any fancy account actions or log off then back on, nor were any chickens sacrificed to satisfy the computer deities.
I say better because I'm still seeing threads marked as unread going back to 8/29, but on the main messageboard page at least this morning only the subforums which had actually received new posts were marked as such.
Progress, or maybe a cookie expired? I did not have to log back on when I first accessed this morning, which WAS the case on Monday (and resulted in everything being marked read).

They aren't bugs or work arounds. They're undocumented features.
No change on the log in, forums read vs. unread undocumented feature here either, schweady.

Not sure if it's been reported already or not, but I've started to see a few threads where somebody does something, then all of a sudden all the text in the post below is in italics. Some how some tag isn't getting in there. Here is a link to such a thread - look down about half way and you can see it starts with Frenchy19's post - there is some sort of hated box like a quote box then no more standard black text anywhere.... I'm finding that when clicking on a topic (in this case it was the no dishes thread in the camping recipe subforum), the back button doesn't seem to work. Digging a little further, the page seems to be reloading itself multiple times so that all my previous page history is filled with that one page. Each press of the back button just goes back to the previously reload of the page and causes it to reload a few more times.

This is still happening and I've noticed that it's always in relation to the same 2 ads. Adblock stops the issue.

I would suggest editing the code so it is not possible to double post simply by hitting the submit button twice. I don't think I know of another site so prone to double posting. Also might want to increase the active area of the "submit" button beyond the actual borders of the button(or at least to the the edges of the button).
