I'm sure someone has done something similar or exact for all I know but I thought I'd share these rod holders I made for my SR Quetico 17... Attaches directly onto the 1" aluminum thwarts. The parts used to make one were:
1- 12" pvc sink tailpiece
1- 1" conduit hanger (comes with bolt)
1- 1 1/2" conduit hanger (comes with bolt)
1- 1/4" x 1/2" bolt
2- rubber washers
3- wingnuts
I used wingnuts on the hangers to make them adjustable in the field and a wingnut to connect them so you can tighten or adjust the connection with just a screwdriver... if I had used a regular nut you would have needed a screwdriver and a wrench/pliers and I bring only one leatherman into the BWCA. I may notch out a little area for the spinning reel arm to drop into... hope this maybe helps someone on a budget who wants a cheap, lightweight rod holder. Cost about $6-$7 a piece to make... about half if you use a long tube of pvc and cut it down. The sink tailpieces were about $3 at Lowes.

I never knew these conduit clamps existed. I'm going to try them as a battery mount in my SR. Off to home depot...

I didn't either really until a couple of days ago after researching different clamps... They are a lot more sturdy then I thought they'd be. I've got a Garmin Echo 151 on the way and the original plan was to order $60 worth of Ram mounts... That plan was scrapped when I found these. $.79 a piece. I'll post pics of that when I'm done.

In the electrical field one manufacturers name is Mineralac, the trade name for them is Cowboy. I once asked why Cowboy? Well, it is what the cowboy's legs look like after riding sixteen hours, the clamps are straddling the pipe like a cowboys legs straddling a horse. Who knew?

Very nice holder, much better than the plain old PVC pipe. The tailpiece makes it much more aesthetically pleasing.
You can get cowboys in stainless steel as well as PVC coating, ask for Ocal hangers, these will be more expensive.

So I wanted to do a quick update on these rod holders... my canoe is stored about two hours away from where I live in Fargo. Due to this fact I wasn't able to test fit these rod holders until this last weekend... didn't fit. The reason? While the thwarts are 1" diameter, the 1" conduit hangers I used are for, I'm assuming, 1" diameter inside the conduit. Maybe someone with more knowledge with these can chime in... Anyways, short story long, the hangers I have were too big. I have since bought the 3/4" and 1/2" hangers and will see which fits better. I will once again update with pictures either before or after my numbered lakes trip on the 20th...

Very creative and looks very interesting. I would like to see a picture installed on the canoe with a rod in the holder if you get a chance. And hear how it performs when a big fish (or snag) grabs the line.

Duct tape to the rescue! You can wrap duct tape around the thwart to build up the diameter to match the clamp so it may tighten securely.

That would work just fine in a pinch but I'll have time before the trip to install the right sized hangers... they are very cheap :)

I won't have time probably until after my trip on the 20th... my canoe is stored at a lake place on the way and I will be literally installing them when I drop the canoe in the water. There will be pics though I promise! I don't expect there to be issues with the holders due to a snag or strike... I am usually very good at making sure my drag is set properly for the occasion and most of my fishing will be jigging. A lot of the time it will serve just to keep rods out of the bottom of the boat.

I see this is an older post, but hoping you had some insights. I love the design, but I'm looking to modify it so the rod can be 45 degrees up and 45 degrees back. Any thought on achieving it? I thought of inserting a triangle piece between the two clamps, but not sure what to use.

Maybe one of these, bent to 45 degrees inserted between the two conduit clamps.

It is a round clamp that can rotate 360 degrees around a thwart and the clamp that holds the drain pipe rotates 360 degrees to the thwart clamp. To achieve 45 up and 45 towards the back would just take some adjusting of the clamps compared to how they are connected together and then in turn, how it is connected to the canoe thwart. It has basically infinite adjustability. Just make sure if you are going to hang a rod holder towards the back that your drag is set properly... A snag or large fish may have your rod joining Davy Jone's locker ;)
