STP opened today in Eagan, MN. Their outdoor gear area was rather pathetic, but there were some great deals on clothes. Nice to have someone new in town where online purchases can be shipped for free to the retail store.

Sounds like the original store in Reno, NV. Lots of clothes but a small selection of gear. You could probably outfit a camping trip but would have only one or two choices of each item you needed. When we were in Reno, we did great on clothes, got a good rolling duffel (and later ordered a second one), and a few dry bags.

I went to the pre-grand opening Tuesday. For some reason I was expecting more or bigger I guess. Not knocking the place more based on my unfounded expectations. Place was busy though and lot's of people in line to buy stuff.
I'll definitely be back fun to look around.
As others have said best part is the free ship to store now.

I was actually hoping to see some of their home furnishing. Have purchased towels, sheets, rugs and garden stuff from them online at some outstanding prices for quality merchandise. Also, it will take a couple weeks for the MN store to appear online as an option to ship to.

Yea that was some of my expectation too.

I just got back from Sierra Trading in Eagan. I'm slightly disappointed after looking forward to the grand opening for months. After reviewing their catalog, I was expecting the retail store to be a cross between REI and Midwest Mountaineering. I would compare it more to an Eddie Bauer with a few miscellaneous camping supplies. I'd agree with others that the retail store is mostly clothing. Much of the clothing is organized in what my wife calls the somewhat chaotic "TJ Max method" which drives her crazy. They had some camping gear and dehydrated meals that might be good in a pinch. I actually laughed at loud when I saw their "fishing department" consisted of a strange mix of a couple crank baits and some fly line and one prepackaged rod & reel spinning combo. They do have a large selection of sleeping bags and pads on display but I'm not in the market for a bag and so I didn't look at the brands. Strangely, they do have the largest selection of dog beds on display that I've ever seen. Even though it wasn't what I expected, I can see myself shopping there for outdoor clothing, shoes, or a last minute camping gadget. But only because I live in the neighborhood.

If you live in/near the twin cities, look at it as a place to have orders sent to sans shipping. I ordered a few things online and picked them up today.
If you are looking for gear, you will most likely be disappointed with their in-store selection. For me, I was hoping for more of the home stuff they offer online as I have more gear than I will ever need. That said, in either case, you can now buy anything online and have it shipped to the Eagan, MN store for free. Works for me.

Glad I didn't miss much. I was swamped that week but had wanted to attend the preview night. I am way more into gear than clothing, but will enjoy free shipping if I need a low-price item, lol.
