Just letting people know that Amazon is now charging 7% sales taxes for shipments to Illinois. I think this may be a recent change.

Probably means they opened a distribution center in the state. Same thing happened in California a few years ago. Overnight shipping and, especially, one-hour delivery mean they need distribution centers closer together.

Also happened in Wisconsin.

Yes, they have distribution centers in Illinois now. We do get same day delivery on some items.

Yes so now since they actually have a place/ warehouse here in IL we now have to pay taxes on purchases even though the items may not actually be shipped from there.

It's been happening for a little while now.... I think i've been paying taxes on my purchases for most of this year if not longer. I live in IL too. Lots of fast shipments given the massive facility in Kenosha. Didn't know about Romeoville.

I all likeliness you always owed state taxes on items purchased out of state or online. Not being checked is not the same as circumventing tax law.

With the Wisconsin Amazon presence in Kenosha I no longer need to self declare my out-of-state online purchases on my income tax return since state sales tax is automatically added to my order.
