With all the folks going solo [this seems like much more popular now than when I first joined the Board] I was wondering if anyone out there had tried going solo and didn't like it or whatever and never did another one? I swing both ways, solo and tandem, enjoy both but would really miss going solo if I couldn't go solo at least 2-3 trips a year. FRED

for me i think it's in my blood. i went solo for many years after canoe tripping with others for many years as well.
then i missed company on my solo trips. found a partner on this website, and we tandem, solo together when we can, but i have still gone by myself.
i think for me once a solo traveler, always.

Know of a few, 1 became geeked out by "sounds in the nite", sort of mind on overtime stuff. Others didn't like being alone for a length of time. One of my first suggestions is always to experiment with simple solo situations either camping in general or canoe tripping in specific, some folks just are not wired the same. One thing I have noticed is most of the non-solo folks still enjoy paddling a solo canoe.
Personally, I'm happy as a clam being alone. Do a LOT of camping (canoetripping, hunting, fishing, hiking from base camp, and backpacking), year round, 80% of the time alone.

Did a six-day solo this month, first time in years that my wife and I could not align schedules for a trip. Returning to solo didn't strike me as any big deal prior to the trip, and being alone did not bother me in terms of travel, safety or night fears. But I really missed processing sights and events with her -- to the extent that I didn't enjoy the trip as much as I'd expected. Not sure what that means for future solo travel.

I do enjoy paddling solo. I really like being able to get up and go at first light. There is no better time to paddle than dawn because the water is smooth as glass and the air has that fresh dew smell. But by mid-afternoon I get too antsy.

I come from a big family. I always have had people around me. I have tried 3 solo trips longer than 2 nights. I can't tolerate being solo that long. Being around people is my nature.

I soloed once in 15+ years and it was fine but I really enjoy the tandems with one or the other of my son's more. As long as I have that option, I'll do that. If they can't go, I'll solo again.

What is "solo together". Sounds like a contradiction in terms.

I really enjoy my solos, although I sometimes go with others and enjoy that too. I'd really miss it if I couldn't do another solo. I've always done a lot of things alone, ever since I was young.

I think it's where they are each in solo canoes. I found out this year I like a hybrid type of trip. I started out solo with my dog and on the 7th day (of 14) I met up with a fellow also soloing and spent three nights on a remote lake before going our different ways to finish our trips. Although we never met in person we knew each other from here and another board for maybe 5 years.

It was very cool and I hope to arrange things like this on all future trips. The best of both worlds if you ask me.

I wish you would try Quetico one year. The Bdub has lost its appeal to me. Yes, it's cheap and convenient but that is a big part of the problem.

It's been on my list of things to do for a while, but now I'll have to see how I recover from the heart surgeries. I'm already committed to taking a friend from work into the BW along with my brother in 2017 and Quetico isn't an option for that. I hope to revisit that idea in 2018.

we both take our solo canoes, take solo day trips apart, meet up later in the day, but camp together.

My canoeing partner talked me into buying a solo so we can solo together. He and his son did a solo together trip and had a great time.

So next year we well do a solo together trip and see how it goes.

I like sharing my wilderness trips with others maybe this the best solution.

Not sure if I can.. Am only in week three post knee replacement.

Not sure if I want to.. I do enjoy paired solos. Takes some of the work off and help is available if I need it.. Sometimes getting up is a chore...Or getting down.. on the floor.. haven't tried it yet after the operation.

I just passed my 9th week, and I am doing great the doctor says. very little pain still having trouble sleeping but hopefully that will get better soon. As far as everything else I am ready to get back to work.

I am planning next years trip. Not sure where to yet but I have all winter to plan it.

I did a solo trip a few years ago and decided it's not really for me. I've been on a few group solo trips and enjoyed them more than trips in tandems. I like the option of going out when I want and where I want, but like the idea of going with other people. Kind of a gregarious hermit (if that's a real thing).

Used to solo hike in the Pacific NW a lot (Mt. Hood and the Col. River Gorge); but haven't done solo canoe trips. Might have to since my canoe partners only want to go on one week trips and I live to spend weeks in the canoe country, and hope to go further North into Ontario as much as I can; before I get too damn old.
