Even back in the day the nutty professors I had to deal with were at least on this side of the brink. Not sure if I would rather be a cultural appropriator (for using a canoe) or being blamed for the stench wafting up from my canoe. I need a safe place.

Ugh-genocide by canoe

The Fox article is everything I don't like about most internet news sources. Just a few paragraphs that take something out of context to illicit a gut reaction that draws more people to click on a link.

Following the Fox article to the original CBC interview gets you an 8 minute conversation from someone who doesn't sound near as whacky by the end and, I must say, I agree with what she said in the last minute of the interview when asked "What do you want people to actually do about this?"

I see she has written some books too. Hummm. I think I know from where the stench emanates. I wonder if she also believes, as a professor I once had, that the stave silo is more of a phallic symbol designed to oppress women than an efficient storage system for grain...

So many seem to relish being "Offended?" You know, I've been offended and discriminated against one hell of a lot in my life. And you know what? IT MADE ME STRONGER! What do you sharpen a knife or an axe with, butter? Nope. Hardness, adversity, etc makes you stronger. Life is unfair, get over it. It seems like we have a world full of pansies who think they should never be offended and that utopia can actually exist if only everyone becomes "Enlightened" and can think EXACTLY THE SAME? GEESH! OK, I feel better now, rant over!

OK, then, isn't Indian/Native American use of a Lund with a Merc a cultural appropriation and genocide of the white race?

a few years back, they had to go to a white guy to teach them how to build birch bark canoes, since they had forgot how to build them.

"They"
may be a bit of an overgeneralization

I do know that Barry Dana chief of the Penobscots commissioned Steve Cayard to teach birchbark building

I am not aware that happened in many other First Nations

Yep! As soon as I saw the Fox News link, instant red flag. I also love the people who complain about everyone who gets offended. They are the first to get offended as soon as religion or anything questioning American exceptionalism is brought up.

Against my better judgment I listened to the interview and the overriding narrative that came to mind was that of the old Saturday Night Live Point/Counterpoint skit.
Counterpoint
(Meant in good humor, really!)

Why is that an instant red flag? I read the news article and listened to the full interview..they were consistent with one another.

Because it's not news it's sensationalism and opinion.

LOL... that old battle cry. How do you define news? Show me a single news outlet that doesn't use sensationalism and opinion. I suppose it's easier to ignore it when you agree with the message.

What a bunch of f*****g BS. The exchange of ideas, technologies, foods, religions, and pretty much everything else has been going on since day one--whenever different cultures connected.

The Plains Indians would have continued to hunt bison and other game on foot--and would never have mastered the vast expanse of the Great Plains--had the European (Spanish) Conquistadores not brought horses with them to North America.

No First Nation person living in the Canadian North would trade modern snowmobiles, rifles, airplanes, and foods for the old ways of living. Besides, the North could never support the number of people living there now, and historically, people lived there in VERY LOW densities.

If you think Fox News or MSNBC or Huffington Post or Brightbart (I can keep going) is "fare and balanced" then there is no point in continuing this.

I've been paddling my canoes about 45 years and all I ever smelled was woodsmoke from a few campfires, and a little gas leakage from my bow paddler...

It wreaks of condescension. As Alan mentioned, taken out of context. I do not feel guilty as the professor initially made it seem us "white men" should feel, but again, I think at the end she merely wants people to remember the history. Do I completely agree with her, absolutely not. It's merely someones point of view and looking at something objectionably.

I don't see that her credentials as being a professor of English has anything to do with the focus of her topic. If her background were sociology or history, I think that would be more credible.

That was exactly my point..you seemed to single out a single news source as not being "news". Are you now saying that all news links are instant red flags?

Uhhh, I DID. My "Privilege" is that people in my childhood instilled a "Work ethic" instead of idiotic intellectual drivel like that professor oozes! It had nothing to do with being "White" and it had nothing to do with "Privilege."

I WORKED full time to put myself through college, I worked when I was in HS. I started CANOEING to FISH and bought a canoe because I was too poor to buy a boat. It had nothing to do with being wealth and privilege. Why is it that "Intellectuals" feel more comfortable "Labeling" everyone as they do animals? Hmmmm.

Oh, and I guess I'm not REALLY "White," although I look Caucasian? I have "Native American" or "First nation," or whatever the "Label du'jour" is for my Cherokee and Osage ancestors running through my veins along with Scottish, Welsh, et al.

Oh gosh, I just have to quit this. The fact that I'm even giving this educated idiot the credibility to debate her thoughts sucks. BUT, three things I always feel compelled to defend; I will defend my God, my wife, and my canoe(s)!

Ya, agreed. Take 8 minutes and listen to the interview. A lot of stories are attached to symbols, some more predominate to others. Maybe not everyone looks at the canoe in a revered state. And I agree Alan, her answer to that question is good.

Err uhh not sure why i am saving for my daughter to go to college but at least this goofball is across the border. Curious since i am part Hawaiian if that makes my culture even worse since we are all about the outrigger canoes. But hey I still love this imperialistic website. I almost feel upper class today!!!!

Cheers,

Alika

Nobody attacked any of the above three items. She asked people to reflect for a moment about privilege in her country. Many people who canoe are privileged to do so. Because you are not, doesn't make this statement any less true. Many people have brown eyes. Because I have blue eyes doesn't make the statement false.
