I thought it was a great article.

I read this yesterday and thought about posting it, but I didn't want to be responsible for another mining thread.
I too thought it was a good article and am glad it got posted.

"But on Nov. 8, all Rom’s hopes for working with a Democratic administration came crashing down."

Lets be honest here. Democrats are for mining up here, Nolan, franken, Klobuchar, etc...
Amy Klobuchar has deep mining roots in Ely.

Democrats took a butt kicking up here, as they did in the rest of the country. Well except the coastal states. For the record I am a registered democrat, but they have changed. Growing up the only republicans I knew were Mr. Peanut and the monopoly man.

Ms Rom has done well for herself. She got rich off the legal system and knows it well. She is an attorney.

Good article, kind of reminds me of the lady that climbed the Redwood tree years ago to protest logging one of the last stands of old growth Redwoods.

yep. i also thought is was a good article, wasn't too touchy-feely, if you didn't know anything about the issue at hand this article wasn't over-the-top about it and it might encourage people to do a little research about the issue just to be informed.

This is not a rhetorical question...is it really as easy as saying, "Democrats are for mining up here....?" I'd imagine, but do not know for sure, that the politicians you mention are for mining in general, but not in every case. I know that for many, correctly or incorrectly, the would be Polymet and Twin Metals mines are outlier cases when considering legacy costs, environmental degradation, cultural costs, etc.

The politicians I mentioned are for Twin Metals and PolyMet. Hope that answers your question.

"To date, not a single candidate opposing twin metals or polymet has been elected."
quoting the Ely Echo volume 45 number 48.

I can't think of any democrats that lost that were against the mines. Can anyone?

Thanks for posting the article.

A difference between a democratic and republican administration may not be the local and state elected officials but the Secretary of the Interior. It is likely that a department led by Sarah Palin (to use one potential nominee who has been mentioned) will be friendlier to mining than current Secretary Sally Jewel.

I liked the article. I'm an outsider.but only by state lines. I love the BWCA. Anything of this magnitude is certain to cause an inpact.which I would be against. I need to become a little more informed on this to really comment about. I would hate to see the proposed area look like north of Virginia. If we need copper so bad then quit minting pennies and dig up old landfills for all those old tv's and radios and cars we threw away years ago.....

11/27/2016 10:22PM
Right now there is a excess of copper in the world and the biggest mining company in the world Glencore and owner of Polymet is shutting down a big share of there mines.

Good Write up, great cause.

But while on the subject.........I was incredibly disappointed when she sent out an email on the day after the election. I found it incredibly insulting and frankly I think it was a very poor strategic move for the campaign. She clearly doesn't have a great handle on the demographic that visits the BWCA. I had planned on making another modest donation on Give to the max day but opted to go another route because I was still upset over that email and its overall tone. You didn't need to go there Becky, stick to the mission at hand, keep that crap to yourself.

Or far from the truth. People on both sides are more for environment, politicians on both sides tend to lean to where the money in their pockets come from. We need to be more proactive on searching out facts than getting sucked into touchy feely ads that blast the other side's. Facebook is a terrible place to find facts... It's the biggest place to be led one way or the other blindly. I shutter when I see good people I know blindly " like" some very twisted posts showing anything but the truth in things. There are good articles out there. But media kind of went more the deception route verses truth. The money is better.

I know, fooled by the Alt-Dems. Don't drink the cool-aide

It is very rare at the national level you could call a Republican a conservationist anymore. In the past richard Nixon and George Bush Sr, cared much for the environment. Not anymore. Money first at all costs.

Too bad we have to lump people in to a very few groups and that it seems not possible that two people can agree on some things and disagree on others. The folks that initiated this polarization are the real culprits.

To think this Country as a nation is less than 250 years old and look how rapid the landscape has changed. If we don't protect the very few wild areas left and with some diversity it will b gone forever.

I know the Clintons are not real democrats, or maybe what I thought a democrat was.
I heard they made like 100 million dollars off us. Is that what makes a good politician. This shows they care about money. Name 3 other politicians that have screwed us that bad. Bill Clinton and his lies made me open my eyes. I voted for that lying criminal twice. Todays democrats are yesterdays republicans. Look who the unions and working people voted for.

Hard to get more national then senate ie pro mining Klobuchar and frankin.

Bad environment ? Look at Minneapolis hundreds of shootings and murders. The mayor and cops hate each other. I cant remember the last murder in Ely. Just think if you came to Ely and were spit on and physical assaulted for attending a rally. That happens in Minneapolis.

Every night on the news there is a new group beating a Trump doll hanging from a noose. What if the people did that when Obama won. It would be called racist. Why the double standard??

Would that happen to be Julia "Butterfly" Hill, who had a bunch of plywood and lumber sent up to build a shelter for herself in the Redwood named Luna, to protest the cutting of trees???
The father of the woman mentioned in the Star Tribune article, had 650 canoes at his outfitters, and pumped thousands of visitors into the wilderness each week before the permit system came in.
So, I guess you could draw a fair comparison to the hypocrisy of either one!

I believe they had a fly in resort on Harris Lake in Canada, run by her brother Larry (good guy)
There was another rumor that Bill was considering building, or trying to open a fly in (??) resort at Greenstone Lake about half way up the Fernberg Road, close to the BWCA.
One of Becky's close friends that worked with the Forest Service did not view that very favorably at the time, and it never materialized??
In all fairness, Becky was not involved with that.

I liked the article and everybody knows where I stand on the issue and defend it. But it is not about me and like I said earlier it was a well rounded article. Really no pot to stir here even if you want one. Yes at times like others and also like you want to get in that last word-yes maybe like kids do.

Also I consider individuals who have opposite opinions on this board my friends.
