I have noticed that some campers have talked about lake campsites with a number. All the maps I have seen just show a "red dot". Where can you get a list of lake campsites with numbers? Thanks.

It seems they all have two numbers actually. There is a sequential list into the thousands but also a "lake" number, all sites on a lake numbered starting at 1. You usually see this painted or marked on the thunderbox. I've never seen the lake numbers charted or on maps.

We write the site numbers (the lake numbers, starting with 1) on everyone's maps before each trip. Helps with communication in a larger group (4 canoes) when deciding on sites, describing where fish are caught, etc.

Do you just know them from experience or are they published?

They are the numbers used on the maps on this website and in other databases of BWCAW campsite and portage #s, such as the Arch Harris database.

I wondered the same, I never knew there was a "Number" anywhere else besides a USFS number that THEY had? I still probably won't use them myself as I'm so used to describing where it is on the map. Hard to teach an old dog......

Agree, to a point. But when someone describes a spot as "near the site that's on the first little bay after the portage, just past the site that's on the bigger island shaped like my grandma's liver spot," it gets to be a guessing game more tedious than necessary. :-)

I busted a gut laughing at that one (LOL)! They say "Laughter is the best medicine" and you gave me a big "Dose" with that one (LOL)!
