I have a cantankerous old coot I sit with at the coffee shop who wants to know; how come you can catch more crappie on border waters than internal waters?. Then he wants to know how dnr would know if you were caught with 25 in your vehicle where they came from?

Good point Pete. The DNR guy would have no idea where the bucket of 25 Crappies came from. As far as the border waters go, I think they want Minnesotans to catch them before Wisconsinites. :)

I remember when I was a kid the limit was 25 or 30 for crappies and 50 for sunfish on inland waters.

Maybe if you do catch 25 on the river you should lay them out on the ice and snap a picture with a background of the river.

The limit is higher on border waters to match the state we border. It is simpler for anglers on both sides and more fair. Both states had to agree to the Regs.

To answer how would they know? Once you drive away from the border water they don't know. If you wanted to be a thief/poacher and take too many from an inland water then later claim they were from a border water you could get away with it. Then again if I see it I'd call it in and collect my $500 TIPs reward and deliver a knuckle sandwich as well :)

If the DNR randomly stops you on the road it's more likely it's not so random, they've been watching and have evidence.

I talked to a couple of game wardens from South Dakota tonight and asked them your questions. They said as the two states get together and come to an agreement on the number. They also said that if you were stopped they would have to ask some very pointed questions about where you caught them.
