Story -
Portage clearing trip, about,...7-8-9? yrs ago..
We woke up on Steep Lake that morning. Our sub-group had 5 of us, PortageKeeper, bogwalker, HP, and Nibi Mocs (CCBB name). In addition to doing some clearing (though not all that much that day, as I recall), one guy was having a little difficulty, and the weather was unseasonably warm for May. We had a reasonably long day, heading through South, Sec 3 Pond, Slim, Loon, Little Loon, the river, and finally Lower Pauness. We made our way to the southeasternmost campsite, I believe PK went ahead and snagged the site for us. It was the end of an enjoyably tiring day, and we settled into our chairs to kick back and take it all in. Five of us, sitting quietly, as we'd done the night before on Steep .It's kind of cool, when you can just chill at a campsite and nobody feels obligated to talk the whole time...maybe 45 min of quiet, yet all in the same place enjoying each others' company and the scene around us. But returning to Lower Pauness,..we're sitting around, when we start to hear talking. And banging, as in paddles against aluminum. As the words became louder and more audible, we recognized every 4th word as the one beginning with the letter "F".
"We musta put 50 f****** shots into that f****** buck!"
"Yeah. That was a f****** nice deer!"
"F*** blah blah f****** right, blah f***** blah!!"
As the 15' Alumacraft canoe came into view, the three guys paddling it noticed us. Young clumsyish guys, football jerseys, no pfd's, still chatting loudly, like a meteor landing in a quiet pond. Most notably, they pointed out that we were not paddling, and exclaimed to us that we needed "to get active!!". One or two of us might've mumbled "hi", but for the most part we just stared - each of us getting the humor of the situation, without saying anything. Gradually, the booming sound of profanities faded, no doubt headed to wake up someone on Upper Pauness.
At least that's how I remember it.

And so, as a fun inside joke, if you ever see me and PortageKeeper exchange posts laden with "f***in'" profanities, it all goes back to that memorable day. Makes me laugh even now. :)

I still remember Howie and I looking at each other in disbelief as they came into earshot, then eyesight. These three were so far out of place up there we just stared at them.
