I have a day pack/tackle pack from Cabela's that needs replacing (bad zippers). I'm not sure I need a tackle pack specifically. What is a good day pack that can hold your "necessary stuff," including your fishing tackle?

This is what I plan to bring this year. I have done some day hikes with it and it carries nicely. I sprayed it with a water repellant. I like the roomy side pickets.

I bought a couple of REI packs, a Traverse and a Lookout. I wouldn't recommend them as they don't stand up when you set them down - they roll over zipper side down every single time, very irritating!

I bought a Kondos Day Pack years ago and have used it for many things. It usually gets the fishing gear and rain suits plus the camera for our trip.

After getting a regular day pack soaked by rain and bilge water too many times, I explored the idea of a waterproof day pack and found several models available at thewaterproofstore.com .

The OverBoard model I eventually selected has proven to be very well made, heavy-duty, and protects everything inside from all kinds of weather and water. It is essentially a roll top water proof bag with high quality shoulder straps and grab handle attached. Should last many years. Carries like a regular day pack. Really like it.

Not cheap, but they go on sale now and then.

Osprey makes very good light weight Day packs. I have the Talon 22. Most will hold a water bladder if you want to add that.

My daypack may be a Kelty, but it's just really a school-type backpack.

I use an LL Bean Small Boat Bag instead of a daypack. I really like it - I think it's my favorite canoeing item. Very high quality, maybe a dozen different zipper pockets, clear map case on top, rain cover, and hard waterproof bottom. I portage with my bigger pack on my back, and then I hang this over my neck and carry it on my front so I can single portage. The advantage of this type of bag over a daypack is that it is easier to root around in for stuff, and you can front carry it with another pack on your back pretty easy. The disadvantage is not fully waterproof, and not a backpack.

No offence but that looks like a pain in the butt to portage. I use a small hunting/hiking pack that is only big enough to store a couple of those smaller compartment boxes. It keeps me packed light on tackle and does not get in the way of my front. It allows me to have freedom of movement with my hands and arms so I can eat, drink, or haul other gear. Sometimes we even single portage like this and I can hang on to the canoe to stabilize.

My day pack does multiple duties. I've used it for hunting way more than I have for anything else. I've had it for going on 10 years and it just now has a small worn spot on the bottom of it should probably get a bit of duct tape on it.

Red Head Day Pack

It holds all my rain gear, fishing tackle, tarp, water bottle, filter, etc... and it stands up.

Don't have a good shot of it on a canoe trip, but this gives you an idea.

Maxpedition Packs. . .there are no better made tactical style back packs. I use a Pygmy Falcon II as a day pack. Has water bottle side pockets, cordage on the bottom and front for typing on packable rain gear, and compartments for what I carry.

In a day pack I carry a lunch, first aid kit, some minimal emergency supplies (fire starter etc), and a plastic carrying compartment case of fishing lures.

I used to work with only canoe style packs. . .NRS and Sealline packs. Things got jumbled up in them, and they were heavier and less comfortable then regular packs. I like the Maxpedition line as they are designed to last forever, and to not only carry, but organize gear as well as having great straps and hip supports. Maxpedition Pygmy FAlcon II

I use this cabelas bag as a day pack. It is really a huge fanny pack with additional shoulder strap. It sits upright, holds tackle and water bottles and day-use items, and then the shoulder strap just gets slung over the top of my main pack for a single portage. Able to strap it around my waist for day hikes, but that's more of a rare use. It's not waterproof, but has worked well for me for a few years.

I use the Duluth day pack. Fits everything I use for day fishing trips. It's lasted over 20 years.

I have a Kondos day pack that works out great for me. This pack can hold quite a bit and have two compartments on the side for 4 water bottles and a compartment in front for smaller things.

I have a Pacific Outdoors Sitka bag and love it. Picked it up used at a store in Bend, OR while on vacation. Previously I had a Seattle Sports waterproof messenger bag. When that fell apart I couldn't find a replacement. I prefer the waterproof messengers because they sit nicely in the canoe while fishing and are completely waterproof. Plus they carry nicely on your front while portaging.

I'll throw this out there. We have gone away from smaller extra packs to save weight to single portage. When we looked at where we could easily save weight without losing function the extra pack weight of tackle bags, day packs, etc... was the first thing we eliminated from our gear. We just pack everything in the 2 big packs separated with lightweight silnylon stuff sacks, dry bags and of course Plano boxes. That's just our preferred method. .02

I love my Patagonia Stormfront Sling 20L. It is not cheap but lifetime warranty, perfect size for my needs, main compartment 100% waterproof with zipper access, sling design. with the sling you can go from back to waist in no time to access especially while wade fishing or to easily front carry and throw a larger pack on your back while portaging. I got mine for $160 and have no regrets.

I'll second that.

I just bought the Osprey Ozone 35, which is more of a travel pack than a hiking pack with a laptop sleeve and a tablet compartment, though it could suffice for a hiking pack as well. It's got great shoulder straps and the "frame" is sturdy but comfortable. It has a hydration sleeve, but if I were getting a hiking pack instead of a travel pack, I'd get the Ozone 46 - it's bigger and has a bottom zipper access which is nice.

My daypack is my camelbak.... 100L water capacity and enough room for more than a day's worth of gear. If its not a travel day I also have a homemade clone of the Granite Gear triangular thwart bag which is also my tackle box.

As I stated previously, I am not a fan of several small packs on backcountry canoe trips. However, FWIW, I am a fan of this military day pack.Molle II Assault Pack
Absolutely bullet proof, built like a tank, USA Military surplus right price and very functional. FYI, No I am not selling a pack.

Just going to mention something that was painfully pointed out to me last trip. It's stupid and completely avoidable, but as you get more tired and slightly rushed it is easy to set yourself up for it. If you use a carabineer to attach your water bottle to your pack, don't put it on your belt strap or at the base of your shoulder strap. They can swing around as you put the pack on and smack you painfully between the legs.

Even if you do not get wacked then it can interfere with your steps and tends to settle between your legs and still be rather unpleasant. The base of the shoulder straps is unpleasant as well because it rubs against your hips. Having a place to put your water bottle in a day pack is a good idea so you can avoid little things like this that can cause a bigger inconvenience.

Also if not single portaging then I recommend having a water bottle at both ends of the portage for easy access to drinking water.

This looks appealing. Does it soak up water when it sits in the bottom of the boat or when it's rained on? I don't need waterproof, but water resistant is preferable.

I have a Mammut 22L pack that is about the right size. Maybe the Xenon series if I remember correctly. Got it on Sierra trading post for a good deal. 22L - 30L is a good size for tackle tray, rain gear, water bottle, snacks, headlamp, headnet, etc..

I've never had any water get inside but I've never tried seeing what happens if you let the pack sit in a puddle of water. It is water resistant for sure. The inside seems to have a shiny coating. I've used the pack for more than 15 years and I don't see any wear anywhere.

We use a smaller waterproof seals pack, so it can be carried using shoulder straps. For a day trip we carry raingear, lunch, water, first aid.

I just use a plain ol' roll top dry bag with a carry handle. The wife and I are going to Hawaii in a couple weeks and we bought a roll-top day pack with backpack straps which will become my canoe day pack after we get back.

I like the roll-top because it is completely waterproof if closed properly, and with the clips on the top, it can be secured to the thwart if needed. You can squeeze all the air out of it to conserve volume, or you can leave an air bubble in it to make it float in case of capsizing.

I have 2 sizes. One is just a small personal size that holds a nalgene bottle, a rain jacket, some snacks, and a camera. The other is more like a traditional day pack size that we pack our lunch and other stuff we may need in quick access for the day in... rain pants, first aid kit, etc.

Exped torrent 40 this one arrive from REI today. Picked this up on a Labor Day sale. I usually use a Cooke Custom Sewing rucksack but on my last trip it sat in the bilge water all day and several items got wet, I did not have a waterproof liner for that pack because I used it to haul in my bear vault. So I'm going to try this waterproof backpack canoeing-legend-cliff-jacobson-reviews-torrent-30-pack my next trip for day trip adventures.

After looking around on the web after I ordered the exped I found a review from Cliff Jacobson. Cliff Jacobsen review
