I am new to the canoeing thing. I am interested in a 100% waterproof internal frame dry pack. The MEC Slogg 115L Deluxe Dry Pack interest me due to the features I want. What concerns me is the portages. On how the canoe will rest with the pack on. I'm one of those guys that carry all the grocery bags in on one trip. :P Anyway I it looks like the bag may sit too high when fully loaded and could be a pain while carrying the canoe. Do I go down to the 70L??? The 70L doesn't look to sit as high. I suppose I can always just fit 70L of stuff in the 115L...

One other note is that I go to Canada fishing on the Lac Suel so I wanted a big dry pack for that as well. Any other dry pack suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I have been doing a fair bit of research on this pack and everything seems positive. Not surprising as MEC's branded gear is usually very high quality. I am going to take the plunge on this shortly and will report back to you.

I'm not sure about your portage issue. It will possibly depend on how full the pack is. But it would likely be the same for all dry bags of this volume.

By the way there are two versions of 115l pack. The HD version has a more robust frame and runs about 1.5 lbs heavier on weight and is about US$26 more expensive.

You also must consider how it will fit in the canoe on the water. It's likely too long to fit sideways so it would have to fit the long way, front to back. Will it give you enough room for your feet/legs. Will it give you flexibility to trim your canoe properly?

That's a big pack. I know that if that were loaded full - and thus as high as it is pictured - it would substantially interfere with my yoke.

I could not carry that pack & portage a canoe.

I'll assume this is similar (or smaller) dimensions to the Seal Line Pro Dry Pack 120 which I have used on numerous trips. I can carry the Seal Line with the canoe no problem. I used the old style Borquin pads and the pack does not interfere with them. It can get quite tall if it is overpacked, but then it doesn't quite fully seal. As long as you can get the recommended 2-3 rolls on the top closure then it fits nicely in a tandem canoe.

The MEC looks like a nice pack and reasonably priced. I'd say go for it.

pictures on website make it look not possible with the largest pack, but maybe smaller one.
