I'm heading up to Voyaguer Canoe Outfitters and staying in one of their cabins during the fishing opener.

I really would like to catch walleye and lake trout. I don't care about the size as much (although I wouldn't mind:-) ) just would like to catch some.

I am be there for 3 days and am willing to fish Sag or Seagull or both.

Where would be a good place to go in those lakes and what type of bait/lurers would you recommend? I'm am bringing jigs, minnows, rapalas, no. 44 Sutton spoons, and slip bobbers. Also I'm bringing a portable fish finder too.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

the bay area where alpine flows into seagull is a good place to start(that area use to be posted no fishing until june 1st when the whole lake was motorized) and or trolling from that area to and past the rog portage is a good trolling stretch. motors only allowed on the south side of 3-mile island.

Shock,

Thanks for the info. How long of a paddle is it from the Seagull outfitters to that area. (So I know how early I should get up). Also would you use the spoons or something else?

Thanks again!

you always want to cross seagull early ;) she can get rolling at times. 2 hours or less to the alpine portage. you may want to take the north side , more sheltered path. my group will be on seagull also for 5 days. spoons are great especially in the spring for lakers and pike ! my #1 trolling set up i,ve done very good on (for trolling under 15') is the 7" original floating rapala gold/blk. use a 12"-18" steel leader. i'm positive you'll hook into a laker. 2 pics of my bread & butter. my spoons get extra care. feel free to email me. darryll, suspending lures are great when making turns in a canoe, (pause & go affect)

Awesome info and thanks for sharing the pictures too. Is this a good spot for walleye too? If so, what lures or bait would you recommend?

walleyes , its the main reason why DNR use to close it down, now that theres no motors past and south of 3 mile , DNR isnt going to paddle that distance to put up the bouy markers and have to come back to remove them. for walleyes in any lake in the BW with flowage , it all depends on when ice goes off and the temps after that....there either active or in a post spawn funk, which usually means saddles close to spawn area's. either go vertical with your sonar or , rapalas/smithwick rouges floaters with some split shots in front working shoreline rapala count downs are a good choice too.my brother caught a post spawn walleye with a deeper type bomber lure. but that area is a great place to start like i stated before when fishing opener. seagull does have the make up to produce trophy fish. on a 3 day trip who know's. have confidence and a game plan = success ;)

I forgot to ask do you use leaders when fishing for lakers?

a person can fish for lakers with no leaders , but i would think most would cast spoons with a leader(i do), lake trout aren't exactly leader shy and trolling plenty of pike to take your lure. a 12"-18" #20 works fine unless your targeting trophy's like Plittle does ;) trolling in may(seagull) get yourself a J-18 gold/blk 7" floater with a 18" steel leader i guarantee a laker. it's my bread and butter in the BW. hard to troll a 3 treble lure in milfoil lakes ;) i find larger version of little cleos on ebay. the top 1 is just under 2oz

Way back in the 1970's the river between Sea Gull and Sag they use to haul walleyes out of there by the truck load.
Thank goodness it is closed now early on.

I know people back than kept two limits between two people of 12 walleyes and they all averaged 10 pounds or bigger. Most people back than,it you caught it you kept it.

Thanks! Off to search on ebay. If you have any tips, or things I should look for, or even a auction/seller as a example of what to look for, I'd love to see it.

Just type in "dressed treble hooks" match hook size to your lure size.

PT i,ve seen pics of those days , it was literally a slaughter fest. when you could motor seagull i,ve seen people portage a row boat into alpine , and there was a wood rest area for your motor at that flat-wide 105 portage to alpine, and lets not forget about the picnic tables, never seen 1 on alpine but picnic pt on seagull had an awesome old thick cut picnic table , would have lasted 3 of my lifetimes . pics are from 1991 ?
