My go to jighead is made by Northland. The color is gold plated and the weight I think is 1/4 oz. . I start with gold color and then if others are using a better color I will switch to that one. As far as why I use gold, maybe the fish like it because of the bling they can see it better in stained water.

Northland RZ jig, glow watermelon color.1/16 oz. to 3/4 oz. depending on conditions and species I'm after,

I'm a gold guy, too, in 1/4oz. Wind/drift will dictate weight, but lighter is usually better, slower drop.

One of my favorites.

Round....1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 3/8 oz depending on need. I like the Grass Weedless head from Do-it molds.....1/8, 3/16, 1/4 at home and the 3/8, 1/2 oz. in the BW for swimming a jig.

Yup unpainted is definitely an excellent option and largely overlooked. Lots of pros use unpainted.

SV we use to use that Northland big eye you have in your picture on the Detroit River drifting live creek chubs. There was something about the big eye that fired the fish up......but we also lost a ton of fish on those jigs as the hooks would bend and flex on bigger smallies. We got sort of ticked at Northland for having such a cheesy, weak and ineffective hook and we stopped using them. I am looking at the Z-man jig heads now which have big eyes but are premium. They are marketed at the salt water crowd but a jig head is a jighead.........Z-man uses a Mustad ultra point which are tough to beat. Looks like they come in silver but a guy could always get some gold or copper powder paint and just tape off the eyes.

Anyway........I know its bordering on blasphemy but I can't stand the hooks Northland uses on their jigs. Grab the head off the jig and try bending the hook. See how it flexes? No good.........the bigger the fish the harder the mouth and the more likely these will not gain a firm resting place. But you probably won't know any difference because you never hooked that 8lb walleye with that "tough as nails" mouth in the first place and instead you swung and missed........but you can still go happily on your way not knowing what could of been with a better hook (ouch!)......... Sorry, I know that hurt but clarity over agreement is high on my personality trait list. My therapist calls it a "character flaw" ;-)

This and black with yellow eyes is typically what I use with fake leeches.

This jig color thread might be useful to peruse as well.

Football style
3/8 or 1/4 depending on technique, wind and depth
Sometimes 1/2 but we have a lot of wind in my area
Color- bright in dirty water and neutral in clear

I've always had good luck with Road Runners as well, pour/paint my own, and white and chartreuse are my best producers, followed by brown with orange mix.
