Picked a couple J13 FT jointed floating rapala in a bright fire tiger color just because they were only a couple bucks. Usually 8 or 9 bucks. So......
Now what do I do with them? :) I have had luck with the J9 in gold before and F11 and big husky jerks but never threw a big jointed floater this bright.
Maybe this summer at night.? Has anyone had luck with this particular lure in this color? It is big and bright. I usually stick with silver and gold and not jointed. Just wondered.

OTH

Lots of guys like the Firetiger but I have never been a fan........and I have never been much of a fan of jointed Rapalas either. But again lots of guys do great with them so don't listen to me and give it a shot.

But having said that there was a neat trick I seen once with a jointed rapala. They ditched the back half of the lure.............opened up the eye of a big worm hook and attached it to the front half of the Rapala. Then they rigged a big weedless rubber worm on the back of the thing. Can you picture working that through some weeds? I bet it would be fun to fish.......I made one but never used it.........still sitting in one of my many boxes waiting, always waiting.

I think something like that would be a "whack-em" lure in canoe country the first half of the season wether in the weeds or open water. Fished slow or fast it would look like a snake........I would rig mine with a culprit brand worm, something which matched the Rapala head. A trace of Knot2Kinky wire in a very light lb test would keep the pike from taking it away from you..........but fished with straight mono I bet the smallies would blast it as well. Twitched on the surface.......and then swim it 4 or 5 ft........kerpow!

Fire tiger is a great color option. You can always troll them with weights. Also, with jointed lures, you can go pretty slow (0.75-1mph) and still have some action to it.

The gold J-9 is one of my favs for trolling walleye. I would think your fire-tiger lures would work well for slow trolling big pike.

Firetiger is awesome in either clouded water or tannin stained water. Once in awhile for some unknown reason lakers will hit firetiger patterns in hyper clear water ,even though it looks nothing like anything they would ever feed on ,unless they think its a brookie in spawning colors.

I have had great success with the Rapala firetiger varieties, but have not used a jointed firetiger that size. I can't see why it wouldn't be a good option.

Frist trip to the bwca I purchased a firetiger at call of the wild, lady there said take some color with you could not keep fish off the thing NP walleye and Smallies. 2nd trip loaded up on that pattern couldn't catch anything. 3rd trip it was so so. I'm headed back in June you can bet there will be some firetiger in the box I'll let the fish decide what they want. good luck

What BP said: tanninstained water. The jointed will work at very slow speeds.

Dark, stained waters in early mornings and twilights during shoulder-season fishing is a good choice for starters. Sometimes it is just what they are hitting on and nothing else.

quote HighnDry: "Dark, stained waters in early mornings and twilights during shoulder-season fishing is a good choice for starters. Sometimes it is just what they are hitting on and nothing else."
i did a rapala rebate one year, the deal being buy 3 and they send you one of their choice free. they sent a "hot tiger" jointed shad rap js05. i tend toward using natural colors so was unimpressed by what they sent. on the last cast of a trip i decided to use it and caught a 37" pike. as HighnDry said, it was twilight. i now have no problem with bright colored lures.

I bring one natural minnow pattern and one fire tiger. Or a couple of each actually, shad raps. Same with minnow baits. Some days one pattern works better than the other. Haven't had much luck, if any, when I've tried a jointed Rap. A gold and black two hook original minnow is a confidence bait for me. Always have loved that lure.

I bring two J13s, gold and firetiger. I like them for trolling on travel days when I'm not worried about catching a few walleyes for dinner. Great northern lures. I always use a knot-2-kinky leader with them. When I need some walleyes, I use a perch TD9.
