Any suggestions for a cost effective way of getting a satellite phone for a week in the bwca? We use it for emergency and about 10 minutes of calls during the week to check in. Costs for a week at this rate average around $300+, so looking for a more cost effective way of having this service.

If you are going out of Ely I would check with Voyageur North outfitters for a rental on a phone.

I rented a sat phone from Williams & Hall last year for $100 a week. I imagine that other outfitters charge similar amounts. We only use it for emergencies, so we accrued no additional charges. I personally don't want a sat phone, but it provides security of mind for a non-tripping spouse.
