Have you ever caught the "Grand Slam" ( pike, walleye, trout, sm bass ) with the same lure on the same day in the Boundary Waters or Quetico? If so, what lure were you using?

Believe it or not I was able to do it with the BooYah Chartreuse Double Willow Blade Spinner Bait one day ....... it was either really late May or the beginning of June, can't remember the exact date.

A great smallmouth search lure.......

I did, lure was a 3/4 oz. white jig tipped with a 4 inch double white twister tail. Not very fancy, but it worked. Early July

No trout :( but add crappie to that list and did it with a tail dancer in flash yellow perch.

No Lakers, but have caught walleye, smallies, and northerns all one morning on chartreuse jig with spinners.

I use a similar bait that I make up myself. 1/4 jig head, mr twister bent wire thingy, and I replace the blade with a willow leaf blade. They used to sell it as a bait called a bass buster which was basically a big beetle spin. It's been my goto bait for ever. I use either plastic, or a leach on the jig. I generally do not fish trout, but have had many days where I have caught bass northern and walleye.

An interesting question, Mike, and quite a feat, but like oth and oz, I did catch three of the four within an hour. I was fishing a little lake with little lakers and catch six on a Mepps spinner in half an hour or so, but only that species. There was an adjacent lake separated by about ten feet of rock and I cast from that rock with the Mepps and caught a bass and a pike. If only walllee had been in the canoe! I could have hooked him!

I was thinking I might see a few people chiming in that they caught the Grand Slam on a black and silver original floating Rapala. Those original floating Raps can catch them all.

I've caught the grand slam on trips, but never with the same lure. If I was going to try to catch the slam with one lure it would probably be a black and silver Rapala.

So, one spring, first of June, on a lake east of the White Otter area, I was working along, well on my way to a 100 fish day(well, it seemed like it!), and I had caught pike smb, and walleye on my friend, the 4 inch curleytail grub. There on the point was a couch-sized rock sticking out of the water. It was no more than ten feet from shore, and having filleted on the rock, I knew the depth between the rock and the was less than 18 inches deep. Just 'cause I was determined to use every lure I brought, I chunked out a Suspending Rouge...first twitch of the rodtip brought a SLAMMING strike. It turned for deep water, and slugged it out, never jumping like the small-.....it was a laker!! That close to a single lure slam! .....little weasel probably would have hit the grub.........

How do you tie the R-bend on? Snap swivel? I've never been able to accurately attach this to my line without it sliding all over the place and ending up near the heaviest part of the lure.

To answer the OP, if it's going to happen for me, it will most likely be the gold/black storm thunderstick, zebra pattern in 11cm. I've come close on that one :)

Highndry: use an Improved Trilene knot. Cinch it down good and tight by wetting with a quick lick of the tongue. Supposed to be a 97% knot. I've never had it slip...never had a pike bite-off on a spinnerbaits.(for some reel fun, try a 1oz. short arm in cabbage weeds....pull it up 3,4,5 feet and flutter it down)

Yes, on a Little Cleo tipped with sucker meat. Only largemouth bass instead of smallies and on 4 different lakes same day. Only one walleye but multiples of northern, Lakers and largemouth.

I like an R bend but I also like a free swinging attachment point which is tough sledding..........use a "collar" of plastic aquarium tubing and slide it over the R bend to keep your clip from sliding around. And of course I use a Fas-snap matched to the Lb test of the line I am using......heavier line gets a larger snap.

If you opt for a secure tight connection just insist that the bait is not running off to one side. If it does that = no fish. Look at the knot first to make sure it is coming off the lure straight (sometimes they get pushed to the side) then if the lure still tracks incorrectly bend the entire wire assemblage in the opposite direction of the "lean" until it straightens out.

A bow or curve in the track of the line while you are reeling the lure in will also cause a spinnerbait to run a bit sideways. Say you make a long cast and the wind blows a bunch of line sideways.......no good. Make sure you have a straight line between lure and rod tip.

I like trailers on the Spinnerbaits and a curly tail is hard to beat but lots of other possibilities are there as well. Chartreuse is the color most guys swear by but I like a spinnerbait with lots of lime green and a little chartreuse.......I also like lime green blades or small silver colorado. Used to do well on a smallish thin wire spinnerbait and light line and the 8' steelhead rod. An unusual set up but it worked very nicely.

Just to add to MT.... buzzbaits are the worst about not running straight. However, it can be a plus. When casting around docks you can run the buzzer under the dock if it planes off one way, and there are counter rotating buzzers to go to the other side.

I've done it several times trolling deep husky jerks. I'm too lazy to change lures. Firetiger, gold and silver. Adding and subtracting weights depending on species targeting.
Has anyone done it from shore in one spot? Probably have to fan cast and have a spot with varying structures and depths. Dawn or dusk would help. I'll have to try it my next trip. I have a couple spots already in mind.

I just tie a tight quality knot and it doesn't slide on me. I have never used a swivel on a spinnerbait such as this, maybe with a an in-line spinner like a Mepps.

03/03/2017 05:33PM
Thanks QM. I have gotten wicked line twist with these so that's why I asked. Also, they've slipped off to one side or the other. I finally was so frustrated that I took a pliers and twisted them into an "o" at the top so that I could put a snap swivel on one of them (my own handmade lure). Just thought I'd mention it to see how others dealt with it.

I was actually fishing for smallmouth (shocker, I know) when I caught the other 3 of the slam. Northerns always come easy on the spinner bait. The trout were a surprise, but not a shock. I caught a few that day on the spinner bait. The last of the four was the walleye and I only caught one walleye that day and it was a nice 3 pounder. It was sitting in about 3 feet of water where a creek was flowing into the lake. Always fish moving water when you see it.

High / dry
Are you sure you are remembering correctly? A spinnerbait such as the one QM pictured will not cause you any line twist and I do not suggest using any sort of swivel with one.....that would be a fishing faux paux imo. And in fact I suggest tying tightly just as QM suggests. You will not get line twist using a bent arm spinnerbait. If you are fishing all day using spinnerbaits you can make quite a bunch of casts. Each time you close the bail via turning the handle you put 1/4 turn of line twist. That adds up over a day (plus the annoying flop of the bail)........better to close the bail manually by hand.

You may be "mis-remembering" (is that even a word?) using an in-line spinner such as a Mepps which can cause massive line twist at times and a ball bearing snap swivel could prove handy.

I had suggested a free swinging presentation earlier but that may be somewhat misleading. Lots of Red fish guys like the R bend spinnerbaits / jig spinners and they will tend to lift and drop the bait frequently. Throw on a stiff 30 lb fluorocarbon leader and free swinging is better. Thus the collar of aquarium tubing over the R bend which can keep a perfection loop knot in place.

A black and gold huskey jerk about 7" long. For whatever reason that lure always ran true. I've had many more of the same model but they have never been as lucky. I lost it in a friendly fishing competition. I hope to win it back some day. It's the one missing a lot of paint.

LOL.....I know what you're saying about one specific lure running 'true' in the water, Hex. I had a CD7 Perch Rapala that just seemed like a small and large mouth magnet on a specific Indiana lake. Driving across the lake one day with my young boys, and the smallest one grabs 'ole lucky' off the gunwale of the boat and chucks it in the water. Every other CD7 Perch Rapala since just doesn't seem to have the same success..????? Crazy how that works. I could even feel a different lure action while retrieving that one.....or perhaps it was just all in my head, but sure doesn't seem so.

Yup, Mepps 5. I quit using spinners like the one shown in the photo because they bend way too easily. I now only get spinners with the joint connecting where you tie it to the line - whereas the one in the photo is open so it bends very easily.

I have not had much luck with that color Shock.........but the super bang-em trout lure in Glacier and Yellowstone was a small original in Brown Trout fished with a fas-snap and 4lb line. Yup glacier is flat out jaw dropping even from the road (Going to the sun). I went into the Belly River Valley out of Swiftcurrent which my guidebook author claimed was one of the prettiest places in North America. I seriously doubted that claim since it included the Canadian Rockies. But I spent the max # of nights they allow in the backcountry and it was certainly amazing. Fishing was diverse with lake, brook, rainbow and grayling trout of good size.

An 8ft steelhead rod was key as I had one extra spool of braid and I was able to fling a big spoon way out which resulted in Lakers way deep.

Anywhere small rivers entered or left a lake were worth a hard bushwhack and the little rapala would score on 3 and 4 lb lakers. Imagine wading out into the creek (I had brought waders, crazy town I know) and casting light tackle to nice lake trout in July. Hilarious right!

Everyone is different Miss Molly........some folk specialize with a few species or styles of fishing (like Great Lakes trolling ) but I get bored doing the same thing day after day and trip after trip and really enjoy learning about various species, different environments and the challenge of catching them. Variety is the spice of life as they say.

Grand Slam on one lure? That would be challenging........I think the best shot would be a jig and a white curly tail.

I don't know why you would want to try this. If I did it would be purely accidental. What would the other 400 lures in my bag do then? I go in heavy on the tackle and intend on using at least half of them. I suppose if I were to do this it would be a Mepps #3 spinner. That would catch all of them.

The Grand Slam is also very time dependent, if you ask me. Wait too long, and the lake trout are tough. Go too early and believe it or not, bass can be tough.

We have found last couple weeks of may , first couple weeks of june, or first couple weeks in september.

I've gotten the Grand Slam in September, but I'm not sure I've done it on one bait :) .

My Swimbait idea will definitely get the Slam and Super Slam, because I can use a 1/2 oz swimbait head and fish that in 75-100 ft of water if necessary. I can also fish it shallow and off reefs, or whatever.

Man, I CANNOT wait for this year. Unfortunately, I think the only good choice for the Grand Slam or Super Grand Slam this year on 1 bait would be Ferguson.. , Maybe Lemay, but I don't know of Lemay holds what I Need. Maybe Agnes too, but I'm not too sure I want to travel that far from Kawnipi for the slam.

Decisions, decisions.

Later,

Geo

3/8th oz jig head tipped with a berkley pro twitchtail minnow. Did it in 3 days and the Laker was a surprise. Th e twitchtail minnow is a dynamite soft plastic for walleyes! I use the "bleak" color is good for clear-slightly stained water and white/black is good in stained water. All while walleye fishing in late may. Tight lines

A man after my own heart.........but we slowly drift away from the thread ;-)

Lots of folks have done it.........but probably not to many have done it on the same lure AND the same day as the thread title asks. Pesky details........... Not minimizing the accomplishment (even more impressive that it was done in one of the toughest months IMO to do so).

All except the laker with black jig head and yellow twisty tail grub.

Did get some real deep crappie in place of the laker below the Pictos by lower basswood falls. We caught 3 really fast, good sized too-salad plate big, and had to work their air bladders back in so we quit and tried something different. Didn't seem right to keep hauling them up from the deep when we weren't going to keep them anyway.

You assume too much, sir. Do you want me to mention the specific date as well as the hours during the day I caught each species? Pesky details, I know, but stop with the patronizing winks and excessive ellipses.
