Anyone ever tried Mack's Wally Pop lures on Saganaga?
They use a smile blade and pill float dragging a crawler or leech.
They're made to troll slowly. Buddy from PA swears by them, but I've seen proven lures tank there.
I'm hoping these might be the secret weapon.
Thanks in advance.

Mugseydog,

Yes, I have used Mack Lures Wally Pops for walleyes for several years now when fishing Quetico over the 4th of July and on boat trips to Opasquia Provincial Park in August. They are a proven lure on the Columbia River for big walleyes.

You fish Wally Pops with 1/2 live night crawler or Gulp worms. I pull them behind a 2 oz. bottom bouncer or 1/2 - 3/4 oz. slip sinker Lindy Rig style.

Most of the time I shorten the snell length to 24 inches on stained lakes or when eyes are close to the bottom. On clearer lakes I usually have my snell longer to about 36 inches.

Somedays they work better than regular floating spinner worm/leech harnesses and sometimes not. I always pack a few in my bag when I go after walleye. Good walleye search lure. A good trolling lure.

I use something similar on Erie except I like the slo death hook with the smiley blade. I would like to try some weight forward presentations in canoe country sometime. We used to fish at Batchawanna bay on Superior for big pike but we got wind of some guys getting whopper walleye in the Batchawanna River using weight forward spinners........we didn't catch any but I never forgot.

MT,

Yes I have tried the Slo Death hook set up too for walleyes and I like them too but only have 2 seasons of experience. Somedays they like a bit more flash and bulk like floating 2 hook worm harnesses with a #5 Colorado Blade in front and some days when they are real finicky I will go with just a plain hook or slow death or even a slip bobber ... and of course the TGO method is a "PROVEN" tactic.

On Erie the last few years it seems like black blades have been really good with purple dots.......followed by pink.

Back before the Zebra Mussels cleared the water we had some very scary limits of walleye with Erie Dearies in late spring before they pushed offshore.

Things are quite a bit tougher with the clear water now and you are fortunate to get a 6 or a 7 in with a mix of average sized fish........still a fun day though (unless a cabin cruiser runs you over like what happened to my Dad in my old boat........he was fortunate to have survived.........we upgraded our fishing vessel substantially however in the settlement).

Cool looking lure. A friend lives on Erie and says the water is consistently clear as he's ever seen it this past year or so. Wonder why.

Less wind than usual?
More or longer ice coverage?
Less water run off?
The Zebra muscles have been there for decades now.
