There are 4 of us going in on June 18 for 5 nights. We are planning on base camping with maybe one night going in and coming out. The only definite plan is to fish and the pictographs on LLC. Any suggestions on where to base camp?

David, Welcome to the board! As to your question - There a couple of great sites on LLC just across from the Irving Island pictographs (MN side), on the east-southeast side of the bigger island. #170 or #171. Also most of the sites in Tiger and Boulder Bay are pretty good.

While going to pictographs, you just as well pass by Warrior Hill which is within some 30 minutes paddling at most from pictographs, It is easy to see and not out of the way. Just do NOT get out without Quetico permits.

Another day trip is to cross the portage to oyster River and paddle to the Oyster lake portage. Quite scenic and is one of my favorite portages. The fishing in Oyster is reported as good to excellent. On the way back, you could for fun, travel to the mouth of the Oyster River, then go left into the Agnes lake. You will have beaver dams and a challenging navigation experience. I find going upstream easier to navigate as you will be looking for currents to tell you the way. If you go the reverse route, turn around and back paddle the entry to Agnes Lake. A very panoramic entry awaits you as you paddle in.

Look into a day trip, as an option, to Curtain Falls. One of the premier waterfalls in the BWCA/Quetico area. If you leave early, you should be easily able to see any 2 of my suggestions in one day.

Agnes Lake has some really good options on the right side as you go toward the north end. If used, it will make the day trip longer, but less portage labor since you will be base camping. You can make any of my suggested day trips from anywhere you camp in that area.

Campsite #177 is really nice. It's on the north end of a small island in Tiger Bay. There is a very large rock shelf that goes out into the lake to the north, a small beach in a cove just to the right of the self and a good landing to the left. There are plenty of tent sites up on a hill in a stand of small pines. The only downside is that the fire pit area is somewhat exposed to the north. Other than that it's one of my favorite sites.

Sites on the northeast peninsula on Lake Agnes are easily reached from the Moose River North EP and they're a very leisurely day trip away from the LLC pictographs. Excellent walleye fishing, also.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We would rather not basecamp on LLC, was wondering about pocket or gobequit lakes?

Can you get to Tiger Bay in one day? Assuming you leave around 8/9 in the morning..

I'm not sure, some of the group are inexperienced. But I think so

Moose River North to Tiger Bay - site #178 is 16 miles and just under 500 rods of portages. So move at about 2.5-3 mph and you can make it. Just get moving, no long lunch stop and you should be there at about 4 or 5 pm - if you leave the landing by 9 am.

Depending on how you want to get to Pocket, it is a longer trip and more work.
In Moose river North, north thru Nina, Agnes, Oyster, Gebe, the creeks to Pocket Island is about 24 miles and a total of but under 1,000 rods. (10-12 hours travel time). Even the east facing southerly site #116 - on Gebe is about 20 miles. Doable - just have to get going.

Keep in mind that there may be some extra portages in the early going due to beaver dams that may not be on the maps.

Thanks y'all, we will probably spend 1 night going in and coming out. I know it is hard to find seclusion on a popular route but want to try
