I've been checking out used packs from outfitters and am wondering the pros and cons of these two packs. I realize that the Superior One claims to have 550 more cubic inches (7400 vs. 6850), but I also know that sometimes brands include the "snorkle " in their size. We really want to get down to single portaging and our # 4 packs just won't do. I know that there are better brands (CCS), but I'm looking at a lower used price point for now.
Thanks!
Thanks!

We have 2 of the GG Superior Ones and they are great packs. We purchased them new specifically for the harness and suspension system verses other packs. They carry a big load stable and secure equally distributed on the hip belt and shoulder harness once you have them adjusted properly. We really like them.
I would add they will handle whatever load you can pack in them with ease. We've had them crazy heavy previously. I won't portage them heavier than 65-70# but, trust me you can pack them heavier. My .02

I've got two of the Kondos Special Deluxe packs. I got them used from VNO and they are still holding up well. I think they are a pretty comfortable pack. They hold quite a bit. I also like the mesh pocket in front where I have often times either packed the tarp or the fly from my tent when wet. Plus it is great for other items too.

The volume numbers you quoted are for the "extended volume" in both packs. I own a GG Superior One and I have carried a Kondos Outfitter Special on several trips.
Superior One: superior harness makes carrying loads very comfortable (better shoulder straps, molded waist belt with side stabilizer straps, a shaped frame sheet so that the weight can be transferred to/from the waist belt); side pockets can be used for carrying axes, poles, etc; front pocket is useful for quicker access to some items or to segregate wet items; D-rings for clipping on map cases or other uses.
Outfitter Special: tougher (heavier) fabric, sits upright on the ground better because of its rectangular bottom; shape works well if you want to use it with an inserted box to maintain its shape (i.e. for a food pack); mesh pocket allows wet items to dry a bit while traveling on sunny days; has steel rings for hanging the pack.

I have both packs. Kondos pack is much more rugged, durable, carefully constructed and thoughtfully designed (manufactured in Minnesota). It is close to bomb proof- all the stitching and straps reinforced. The GG Superior One is sized for wide shoulders- I'm a fairly broad guy and cannot keep the shoulder straps in place without the sternum strap. The Granite Gear probably can hold more volume. I find the harness and waist belt on the Kondos pack to be much more comfortable. Personally I don't think it's even close- the level of detail and concern for durability that goes into the Kondos is unmatched with the exception of Cooke Custom Sewing that does similar quality builds.

All 3 brands are very high quality and I've used all of them. I was a big fan of early Granite Gear when they where owned and operated by a couple of hippy looking guys out of Two Harbors. Then they got all corporatey. I really like CCS and Kondos . There's something to be said about companies who make there stuff "onsite"
