So, as I've posted on here previously, I'll be in Ely in less than a month. As I haven't seen a post on this, I thought I'd ask: Where's the best place to grab lunch in Ely?
I've seen posts on where to get breakfast before heading out, but nothing about lunch. I've eaten at the Boathouse and a few other places. Just wondering what everyone's favorites are.

When I am in town I grab a to-go lunch from Zup's deli. The grocery store on top of the hill on Sheridan Street.
On Tuesdays I get Tater-Tot Hotdish.
On Wednesdays I get Sloppy Joe's.
On Thursdays I get Lasagna.
They have other stuff too thats good.
Their recipes are almost identical to the way my mother made those dishes in the 1960's.

For desert I go to the Plum Bun Bakery.
On Tuesdays I get a frosted Blueberry scone.
On...

We just always go to Pizza Hut. Not too adventurous, I guess.

Not sure why. We sure have checked out a lot of places in Grand Marais.

I like to eat local, especially when traveling. I like new dishes and new ways of preparation. I can get Pizza Hut or DQ at home, so when out of town, I like to try new things. Had some awesome pulled tuna BBQ in North Carolina last year eating local. (They smoke tuna steaks in their smoker, then flake it and mix with BBQ sauce just like pulled pork, excellent eating.) I also had a great BBQ Pulled Pork pizza at a bar in Ely a few years back. Can't remember the name of the place, but it was great pizza.

I would have said the Chocolate Moose because that has been one of our lunch places, but I understand it is under new owners and is being remodeled, so now I may not feel the same way about it.

May have to check it out this summer.

When I spent a week in Ely last summer I had my lunch at the Front Porch a few times while using the Internet. Nothing that outstanding eats-wise, but I liked the decaf and surely did appreciate having the Internet once a day.

Northern Grounds lost their lease Stumpy and moved out of town to Silver Rapids Lodge under a different name. There is a new restaurant in the building called "A Taste of Ely" now.

What's that new place where Hardee's used to be? It's great. A perfect place for lunch. Dining outside.

Normally, I do as well. For some reason, over the yearrs, I have had particularly bad luck in Ely. I won't list any names, and Brttons has always been good and consistent, but I've had my share of high priced inedinle food in Ely. Pizza Hut is the most consistent for lunch or supper.

I'm sure we were just there, at these otherto places, on the chef's off day, but we were consistently there on the off days.

The Rockwood looks great, the owners are super nice people, and will be opening on May 4th!
The former Northern Grounds moved to Silver Rapids Lodge, is already open for business, and now called Michael's.

Ely Steak House...I second the burgers and Oatmeal Stout! Avoid the Boathouse...some of the worst service I have ever had!

The Boathouse has great food and beer. Never had a problem with service. Cannot go wrong with the Steakhouse either.

Haven't been to Boathouse, but used to like Cranberrry's I assume it's not changed too much.

Always liked Sir G's. And they must know how to run their business, because - especially for an Ely restaurant - they've been around a long time.

I hope it is still as good as it was in the past! That is one of our favorite stops in Ely

We used to love the Chapman Street Market that my friend Cathy owned, but it closed a few years back. It was a great spot and we were sad to see it go...

It's the same owner as last year, so if you liked it then, nothing should change.
The "remodel" was done out of necessity after a pipe burst, flooding the place earlier this year.

I would second a stop at either Stoney Ridge or the Steak House for burgers. If pizza is your choice than Sir G's is the place to go!

I agree about the Boathouse MajicStik. It has changed a lot from the old Cranberries, and IMO, for the worse. And if you don't care for their in-house beers, too bad. They don't sell any beer but their own.

And the last two trips we stopped they were out of almost all their beers on the "current" list.

I should clarify...we had the piss poor service while sitting in the bar area. The main restaurant was fine...and the food was always fine...over about 5 year period. The last 3 years our service was poor to very poor but we kept going back. The last time we walked in there was ONE table of guys and they weren't happy...we walked out. Went to the Steakhouse and Wes had a beer on our table in less than a minute. Two totally different levels of customer service.

Other than DairyQueen,pizza hut, and cranberry's(closed) my vote goes to Ely Steakhouse or Sir G's for pizza/Italian food.

The Mrs and I had a great bbq burger, fries, and beer at the VFW once. They were having a fund raiser for something. Had great company and conversation with those guys.

Thats Stoney Ridge Mooseplumbs. I may attempt to eat their two pound hamburger called the Sasquatch this year. Last year out of 70 attempts only a logger from Isabella was successful the cook told me.

The resident chocolate lab senses patrons who may not be able to finish their large burgers and patiently waits for a handout.
