Day 1 of 7
Thursday, August 11, 2011 Sea Gull Lake, Alpine Lake, Jasper Lake Jack an I woke up around 4 this morning it was raining off an on all night. We stayed out by mink lake in the National Forest campground so we had a short hour drive up the gunflint to get to our entry point. We unloaded everything in the dark and in the light rain. We set off into the mist around 5:45. Seagull was calm and the rain was coming in sheets of light and harder rain making cool lines of water coming in our direction. The map we had did not have the starting 1/2 mile or so, so we just went for it looking at the map half way across we noticed we were on the south side of three mile island. Coming off the Island end I threw out my deep diver half way across I had something hit hard went for my pole and it was off already. Found our first hundred rod portage and I took my canoe and started off up a slight hill made it all of 45 rods probably less and set the pig down. Tired I went back for my pack met a group of 6 on the way back from grabbing my pack. I got back to the spot I left the canoe and Jack had took off with the canoe, we decided the canoe would be carried across by both of us from here on out. Tail winds out of the east had started picking up across Alpine made quick to the next portage. Had time to fish by the portage as we met a solo, he said the fishing was slow and came from Little Sag. Pulled up the first smallies of the trip fallowed by a couple more on the other side of the portage. We set up on the west point camp site on Jasper, nothing special all burned down trees makes you feel out in the open. Got a fire going cooked up some water for drinking and made some grub. Went out fishing from shore and caught a few by the stream coming in west of the site from canoe. Went to bed early thinking of the next day.
