Steel River Provincial Park near Terrace Bay Ontario offers a challenging loop canoe route, consisting of 1/2 lake travel and 1/2 river travel.
Day 1 of 8
Tuesday, June 05, 2018 We left SE MN for Terrace Bay early the morning on Tuesday, June 5th, and drove straight to Grand Marais for lunch at the Gunflint Tavern. After an ‘Asian rice bowl’ we departed and crossed the border into Canada without issue. Terrace Bay is roughly 3 hours from the US/Canadian border, but the landscape east of Thunder Bay makes for a breath-taking drive.

Once we arrived in Terrace Bay, we noticed that the hotel parking lots were fairly full for 6:30 PM on a Tuesday. In past canoe trips in Ontario, I’ve noticed that the hotels always seem to fill up, their parking lots being full of trucks from hwy and utility workers. We managed to find a room at the Red Dog hotel, which was reasonably priced. We hit up a pasta buffet for dinner and turned in for the night. If you are looking for beer in Terrace Bay, the LCBO (liquor store) closes at 6!
