Cancelled a winter camping trip and instead was paddling into the bwca March 23. Broke a little ice on the way in and also one day a storm passed to the south of us and the winds got up to 20+ mph and in a matter of minutes the entire lake was ice free!

Cancelled my two planned March skiing trips and did one march canoe trip instead.

Wondering if anyone had plans for a winter camping/ice fishing adventure that they had to cancel due to the unseasonably warm March weather?

Yep, we were planning on a trip at the end of the Gunflint the weekend of the 17th plus an extra day, but the rapid decline in snow made us have second thoughts, as our route required a couple miles of travel over land along with some stream crossings. We ended up taking a day trip to some trout lakes around Northern Light Lake off the Gunflint instead. It ended up being the right call, as there was essentially no snow at the end of the Gunflint by Sunday. It would have been one heck of a slog out of there with toboggans.

i was hoping to be out winter camping last weekend laker fishing on the gunflint. turns out we could have been fishing from a boat. honestly if the ice had gone out even days earlier we may have gone with the canoe but we didn't really think the ice would be out and didn't plan accordingly:(

I'm taking my winter camping trip tomorrow. The boat is ready to go and the canoe is licensed. I'm planning on catching a hand full of 4 to 8 pd lakers and a few big pre-spawn walleyes. In about 30 hrs I will be preparing shore lunch with fresh lake trout.

Fishing open water in March! You can only play the cards you are dealt, right? Sounds like fun. Have a great time!

My winter trip was planed for march 18-21. I decided to go a week prior because of the warm temps. still I had to head out a day earlier dew to the rapid snow melt on the trails. Bummer! I feel like it was a good trip and I realized a few things about winter camping in non winter conditions. The most important being that camping in -20 is far easier in my opinion. second is that 60 degree temps means massive amounts of slush on the lakes, and tuff travel on the whole route.
