Tettagouche state park on the north shore has winter cabins you can rent. Scenery unreal.

check out this site. They have some awesome cabins set back in the woods -- lots of snowshoeing / skiing opportunities around.

If you would still like to snowshoe the Porkies there is an AmericInn in Silver City which is only 4 miles or so from the entrance to the Porkies. We have stayed there several times before going in winter camping. It will be busy with snowmobiles, but it is a nice enough place.

The south boundary road is closed for winter as it is turned into a snowmobile trail as is the road up to Lake of the Clouds. You can drive up as far as the ski hill. This makes much of the park inaccessible as far as day hikes goes. You can get on some of the summer trails but in order to get to the first trail head you have a 2+ mile uphill hike with snowmobiles whizzing by. I also discovered last winter- the hard way- that they remove the summer signs for the trails in order to not confuse the cross country ski folks. However, there are snowshoe trails near the ski hill (though we've never tried them).

I forgot there are also Yurts available, but I would suspect they are probably already booked also.

I am looking for a suggested destination for a family snowshoe trip this winter. We have been to Ely, camper cabin at Jay Cooke and Lutsen area in the past. Planning to go Martin Luther weekend, so we can travel a little further. Any suggestions? We have enjoyed the places we've been, just like exploring new.

quote ZaraSp00k: "cabins at Tettegouche state park, fabulous area to snow shoe, great cabins

cabins at Porkupine Mountains State Park in MI UP might be another option although I'm not sure if they are open in winter"

There are three Porcupine Mt. cabins that are available in the winter. Whitetail, Union River, and Gitchee Gumee. Might be hard to get one now though- we have Whitetail rented for a few nights between Christmas and New Years but we reserved it a long while back.

If it's cabin based trip then I suggest the Gunflint trail. Nice places to snow shoe there. You can rent a cabin from an outfitter like Tuscorora Outfitters or Gunflint Lodge.

Or you could combine a cross country ski trip with snow shoeing and stay at ABR in the UP of Michigan. Nice place and great trails. Snow shoeing is off trail and there's probably enough of it to make it a nice stay.

Snowshoe Cabins near Isabella/Finland are super interesting and lots of snowshoeing to be had. Very remote but also very rustic. Rustic is the key word. Another great place is Poplar Creek Guesthouse off the Gunflint Lodge.

Thank you for the input everyone. I had looked at the Porkies, but all of the cabins in the park are full. Any suggested towns to stay at in the UP? Ontonagon is nearby the Porkies, but I've never been there. Houghton/Hancock ?

Great Ideas everyone, thank you.

Anyone ever gone to the Black Hills? Seems it would be a good destination also.

grand portage (not the portage but the town and indian res.), on the lake superior/canadian border has some of the most awesome terrain in minnesota. the area is challenging, the rewards are awesome. a really nice place to take the family, the feeling of wilderness is strong, the history overwhelming, in the winter this area is magnificent.

if you don't stay at the reservation check out naniboujou lodge, naniboujou i really can't even describe this place. just know that it is not your typical tourist destination, unless you seek this stuff out.
